Shirakumo Shrine stands on the former site of the nobility SAIONJI family's mansion. The SAIONJI family was responsible for passing on the art of playing the Biwa (a kind of Eastern musical instrument like a guitar). This shrine enshrines the Benzaiten, one of the Buddhism guardian and legend has it that she was a master of playing biwa. And legend has it that snakesa are assistant of Benzaiten, so there are many pictures of snakes in the shrine. In 1869, Kin'mochi SAIONJI established the private school Ritsumeikan, the forerunner of Ritsumeikan University, here.

A lovely little shrine in the Kyoto imperial castle grounds. The entrance isnt so obvious so very easy to miss! Once in, the ambience is quite different compared to just outside the Tori gate, very calming and soothing vibe.
