Niigata City Aquarium Marinepia Nihonkai (Sea of Japan) — Attraction in Niigata

Some of the exhibits are really awesome and well done and it looks like the animals are really happy. The large animal exhibits like for the seals and the dolphins are kind of concerning because they're just very small. It seems like the aquarium is in the process of improving a lot of their exhibits because the newer exhibits are very animal friendly and nice it just seems like some of the older stuff needs to be updated. It was extremely reasonably priced so much so that I was a little surprised. As a huge aquarium fan it was really cool to see some fish that I had never seen before and as an English speaker with very minimal knowledge of Japanese a lot of the interpretation was very English friendly. However, it is a little distressing to see the animals so stressed out/visibly unwell (especially for some of the Jellyfish and some of the larger fish in small tanks) and some of them were very obviously not in enclosures that they were happy with or were...

A must visit if you're a huge fan of dolphins. The dolphin show was THE highlight of the entire place. Perhaps even my entire Niigata portion of my trip. The show is a 10mins feast for the eyes as the dolphins strut and show off their stuff doing aerial tricks and frolic under water. The rest of the aquarium has the typical stuff you'd find at one. The giant main tank and other individual tanks housing the myriads of fishes and marine life. The whole aquarium is split into 4 sections. 1) The indoor tanks area. 2) The dolphin theater. 3) The seal habitat and 4) The penguin/Arctic area. A wonderful experience, being able to see marine animals so close and enjoy a dolphin show. This show of dolphins and also walruses has marked schedules for better organization of the event. The place has an amphitheater to sit and enjoy the show, in the first places there is always a lot of water when the dolphins play in their acrobatic demonstration, therefore it is very fun when the person is willing to wet their clothes and laugh a lot. ...they also have a souvenir shop with stuffed animals, stationery, keychains all themed around animals found in the aquarium... it's worth going again, it's a wonderful...
