A castle built next to the remains of the old one that's no longer in existence. Very pleased to know it's one of not many castles that has free entrance, and there were mostly middle aged Japanese tourists visiting with a group of schoolchildren. Nice modern touches make for a warm building instead of the cold weather in winter. Quite a walk from Saga eki, so do take a bus that can drop you off very close to the castle. The main palace has been beautifully reconstructed with wide tatami rooms and displays that give a great sense of life in the Edo period. I didn’t notice a moat, but you can climb a stone wall via a staircase and get a nice view over the surrounding area. The grounds are peaceful and well kept, and the whole place has a quiet charm.
