Goshikinuma (五色沼), located in Aobayama Park near the Sendai City Museum in Sendai, is a modest pond that holds outsized historical significance in Japanese figure skating history. 

It is said to be the place where, in the mid‐Meiji period (around the 1890s), foreign residents in Sendai began skating on its frozen surface. Shortly thereafter (circa 1909), students from the old Second High School (later part of Tohoku University) were taught figure skating by a German teacher. These early experiences and teachings at Goshikinuma are considered foundational to the spread of figure skating across Japan.
