GALLERY・CONCEAL・SHIBUYA — Attraction in Tokyo

Man, I always get lost trying to find this place, but I am lost in Shibuya in general. The best I can say is that you gotta head for Daiso, and then turn right, and then there's this crazy bright golden restaurant looking place with a few Buddhas hanging out, and then you go up a slight hill and see a big yellow sign for some club or something, AND THEN you'll see it. That's right, a little square white sign that says "Gallery Conceal" up up up on the 4th floor. I'm not sure there's an elevator. Maybe there's a hidden one somewhere. So it's not fun to hike up the staircases in the summer for sure.

But when you make it, it's great! There's a bunch of little rooms that are offshoots of the main hallway, and you'll be surprised by how spacious the place is. Comfy chairs! Comfy sofas! And lots of art by local artists. Oh it's free to get in and the exhibits seem to change pretty frequently, so there's reasons to come back. It is a pretty great central location in Shibuya. Hip and hidden gallery in Shibuya, so it's not just a clever name. Up on the 4th floor with a small bar and 2 exhibit rooms. Cool place to take a date, or go alone and mingle. 2024.2.4再訪。 前回の写真展の賑わいが気になったので再訪してみました。 今回は大規模なイベント的展開、クラブ的なDJのいる展示ではなく、各エリアを別な方が借りての展示でした。エリアは明確に分かれているので競合などしませんし、広いスペースが使えて良い感じでもありました。 ひとつ問題があるとすれば、入り口でして、暖房が逃げない様に白い鉄の隔壁が閉まってました。 感触としては「本日やってません」的な見てくれですが、開催期間ではある。という奇妙な状況に。 その鉄の隔壁を前に他のお客さんと困惑して「今日お休みっすかね…」「でも、会期ではあるよね…」なんでやりとりをして、意を決して扉を開けたところ開催していました。 以前の熱気で開け放しにしないとどうにもならない感とは違い広い空間を使い展示が自由にできる感じはとても良いなと思えた次第。 この体験自体はインスタレーションと考えれば悪くはないですが、入れずに帰った人は☆-5くらいの微妙な体験になりそうなので、ギャラリーさんはなんらか対応が必要なのでは？と思った次第。 (その辺を含めた会場感なら借りる側も気合い入れてインビテーション配らないとヤバ目？)

2024.1.28初回。 ストリート系の写真展(無料)を開催最終日見に行ったのですが、や、すごかった。4階がギャラリーなのですが、人は4階に登るまで2階の店？が謎の盛況状態だったり3階も謎の店でしたがここ4階はヤバい。3枚目の写真は入り口にあったソファですが、ギャラリーに人が入りきらない。かなり広いギャラリーなのですが(90平米以上は有るかな？)この日は全部使っててDJもいて、8割方海外のデカい白人の男女が集って写真談義に花を咲かせてました。日本の写真がメインでして、ただ気になったのはやっぱ日本の人話の輪に混ざれてないな…と。 まぁ、そんなこんなはよろしくて、たまたまなんすかね、また行きたいと思います。かなりパンチのある作品展で、自分も街の写真撮って展示してる人間なだけになんとも言えない気分になりながらクラクラしつつ渋谷をウロウロ彷徨ったりしつつ帰途に着きました。 行ってみる価値...
