Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Tokyo. We did this on the first day, to take advantage of the jet lag and waking up around 3:30/4. It’s a little further than you might expect and public transport is also limited at that time of the morning, so plan ahead!
The tuna auction starts at 5:30 and is over by 6:15ish. We viewed it from the gallery high above, so although you don’t hear what is going on, you get a good idea of movement, tempo etc.
Connected to the facility you have the wholesale market. It is a 5-10 minute walk from the tuna auction and offers limited viewing, but again you get an idea of the tempo of wholesale tuna market. There is also a selection of shops, selling related knives and accessories. Also in this building there is access to a roof terrace. If the weather is clear, go up and check out views of Mt Fuji as well as the city. It was stunning and also empty.
Between the building that hosts the tuna auction and the building where the wholesalers are, there are lots of restaurants. They open early, right after the auction, so if you are in the mood for beer and sushi at 6:30, this is a good stop for you!
