The Toyosu market is hugely disappointing waste of a long trip. First, most routings require a +30 minute train ride around the inlets. Second, unless you are a wholesaler, you do not see ANYTHING!!! I’d share pics, but there was but a single hallway that says observation hallway that consists of slit-like windows that you can catch glimpse of activity ‘if’ anything is going on (nothing!) when we went. Third, the tourist section is simply stores, of which nearly all had NO fish for sale. Tshirts, spices, knives, but most shops were closed midday. You can much, much find better shops near Akatsuka station. Fourth, the restaurant section is packed. Many close by 2pm. And, none that we found had sushi less than 30,000 yen for 4 sample size bites. No thanks! Great sushi can be found all over Tokyo and sadly (great) cheap sushi was a 30 minute trek away. Perhaps the old fish market was better, and from what I could see of the area, it likely was. This place is so removed, what is there is NOT worth a wasted quarter of a day...
Read moreIt was our last day in Tokyo and we really wanted to eat Otoro for one last time. Not Chutoro but Otoro. We order prior to sitting down as requested by their staff. By the time we sat down and got our dishes we thought that there was a mistake but the staff keep insisting that what we had was Otoro... until the cook came out said that they don't have Otoro for that day! So why charging top dollars for something they don't have? We were so mad 😡 that we walked out and went to eat our Otoro somewhere else in the fish market and it was delicious.
FYI all travelers out there, don't get mixed up between Chutoro (medium fat) and the Otoro which the premium most exquisite piece of the tuna belly. Also the most melting in the mouth piece and most expensive. Some restaurants will try to charge you top dollar for Otoro while serving...
Read moreWe arrived at around 10:30am and there was already a queue. Thankfully the order was already taken during the wait and the meal serves right after getting seated. We get in around 11:10am. The 海鮮丼飯set serves with a bowl of miso soup, the sashimi were absolutely fresh and delicious, and we noticed that the rice were cooked just right, not too sour or too cold( which most do in Taiwan),and the amount was adequate to finish with all the seafood. Though the price might seem high, the meal satisfied all of us. (For advice: for those waiting for more than 1 hour, the meal might not meet your (high) expectations cause it tasted just similar(maybe a bit better?) to ordinary 海鮮丼s, I guess the queue results from...
