Visitors passing though Yamagata Station should make a stop here!
-Extremely beautiful example of Japanese-Western architecture that is not only huge and impressive but also lovingly preserved using the original techniques. This alone is worth the trip.
-Very easy to understand and very informative exhibits abut the history of Yamagata city.
-Expands to showcase in detail the different regions of Yamagata. Very comprehensive.
-Lot's of great stuff I didn't find in museums in Tokyo. These exhibits painted a very colourful picture of the culture of Yamagata through different times. For example, the wartime exhibits were particularly eye-opening; some propaganda materials, government wartime decrees, impact on daily life, etc. were extremely informative and I don't think I would've found out about them otherwise.
Oh yeah, and all the exhibits are free.
Personally, I think they don't give this place the promotion and marketing it deserves...which is a huge pity and a bit saddening considering all the effort that has clearly gone into this place.
Time taken:...
Read moreBunshoukan, the old prefectural offices as some people still call it, became one of my favorite places to pass a little time in Yamagata. Open to the public for free, it's welcoming cafe is cozy in the winter and the stately halls shelter you with the warmth of their history besides their physical warmth. In the summer, the surrounding gardens lure you, and the lovely gazebo is a cool spot to rest, by the brook that spills down the rocks nearby. It took me a long time to get why Yamagatans are so proud of Bunshoukan. It seemed just another mini-Versailles-like palace or posh European statehouse, till I realized that is exactly what it was trying to be like, and doing it very well, and for the last hundred years and more, but way out here, up north in very...
