We absolutely loved this hotel ( and Yamagata City) . Whilst it was wasn’t next to the station ( often choose Eki Mae Hotels purely for convenience of travel ) it was around a 10 minute walk which with our medium sized luggage was fine . What I really liked about this hotel was the scale of it - was large and spacious , the rooms were a really good size , bathrooms had a tub and was great value . The hotel is quite retro in that convention centre way ( chandeliers/sculptures & carpet in the lobby ) so if Japanese aesthetics , or quirky/contemporary design is important to you, you’ll be disappointed . What it does have is a really good location - good shops and tonnes of food restaurants nearby . I really enjoyed exploring the local area , it’s not touristy at all and had a great laid back feel but still loads of places to go . In fact we liked it so much we extended our stay by 2 extra nights . It’s a lovely area to explore as it’s not as busy as other better known cities but it’s not dull or sleepy either and the people are much more open than in Tokyo or Kyoto .Typically this area is busier in the winter for ski enthusiasts but coming here in May was surprisingly lovely . Don’t miss the spectacular Yamadera Temple - for me as beautiful or more so ( certainly less busy ) then Kyoto’s...
Read moreThe place is very comfortable and staff was the nicest I met during my trip to Japan. If you are looking to go to ginzan onsen, it is far, but let's be honest: trying to book a place there is very difficult and expensive. So, the grand hotel seems like a very good and affordable alternative.
Pro tip: the breakfast is very good. I recommend you to get it in a bundle with the room. It will give you enough energy to get through the day and visit the onsen areas without having to worry about food during the rest of the day.
I see some reviewers complaining about the distance to the station. I really worry about their physical condition since it is just 15 minutes away on foot, LOL. And, after the delicious breakfast I mentioned, you will need some exercise!!
Anyways: Affordable,...
Read moreThis Hotel is situated in the heart of Yamagata city and is considered to be one of the best Hotel’s in the city. It looks good from the outside and as you enter the lobby. But my room left a lot to be desired. The single room had a dusty smell, the bed was uncomfortable and it was ver dark and dingy with a very tired appearance. Breakfast is not included and I thought it was a little expensive for what it was! Now Japan is about to open up again to tourists after it’s extended covid lockdown, the Managment need to spend some time, energy and money to bring the rooms up to a reasonable state. I wasn’t expecting the Ritz, but a little more attention is needed. The elevator was also in need of attention. When you look closely everywhere is in need...
