Kinpusen-ji Temple, the spiritual symbol of Mount Yoshino, truly lives up to its reputation.

Its massive main hall and the enshrined Three Secret Buddhas—Kongō Zao Gongen—embody the flourishing of Esoteric Buddhism in Japan. After Buddhism arrived in Japan, it gradually merged with Shinto beliefs. As a manifestation of the “honji suijaku” concept, Zao Gongen represents the localization of Buddhist deities into native kami, eventually giving rise to Shugendō, a uniquely Japanese religious tradition.

last year, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Mount Yoshino’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Three Secret Buddhas of the Zao-dō Hall are being publicly displayed for an extended period. Entering the main hall to worship Zao Gongen up close—whether to make a wish or confess—is a rare and profound spiritual experience. In addition, visitors can admire many exquisite Buddhist statues, making the Zao-dō not only a sacred site but also a treasure trove of religious art.

Exploring the many temples and shrines surrounding Kinpusen-ji across Mount Yoshino requires considerable time and physical effort. If visiting during cherry blossom season, even more time is needed to fully enjoy the scenic beauty. Therefore, it is recommended to find accommodation near Mount Yoshino, ideally no farther than Kintetsu Kashihara-jingū Station, to conveniently plan a two-day, one-night itinerary combining cherry blossom viewing and temple...

It takes quite a long time to get there, but it is absolutely worth the effort. The majestic design of the main hall is unlike anything else in Japan—it has a truly overwhelming presence. (In fact, it’s an enormous wooden structure and a temple of very high status.) You can feel the weight of history in every pillar and wooden component. The principal deities are three gigantic statues of Zaō Gongen, each standing about seven meters tall. However, they are rarely on display, only being open to the public during limited periods in...
