Great cultural monument which (beyond its obvious 'insta-worthy' attractiveness) carries so much historical value. Dynamic in nature, the letters are decorated differently every year. This pays tribute to the ongoing commitment of this area to change, initiative, creativity and celebration of the present times. I absolutely love what it stands for and felt very hopeful for this incredible city and its people, just being here. Free to visit, not overly popular, so easy to take photos of and located right near the sports stadium.

As a landmark of the city it’d be silly not to pass by, but situated where it is and on a busy road means there isn’t a great deal else to do in the immediate area. However this does also mean (certainly every time I passed anyway) that it isn’t swamped with tourists continually and people taking photos. There’s not any signage explaining the significance which I spotted but with the ever changing design it’s something worth revisiting each time you’re in the city.

A very interesting small landmark that certainly deserves a visit. After a small diversion from the main street of Prishtina, you can find a few interesting tidbits in this area. The monument itself changes “skins” as events necessitate it. Behind it one can see the football stadium with a rather interesting architecture. On the other side of the main road one can find a decent sculpture of sorts which goes well with the old Yugoslav building in the background.

Newborn Monument Pristina, Kosovo This massive monument was unveiled the day Kosovo declared independence from Serbia.

ON FEBRUARY 17, 2008, THE government of the Republic of Kosovo declared independence from Serbia and unveiled this monument. The original monument was bright yellow with blue banners to represent the European Union colors.

“Newborn”, a single English word in a country dominated by the Albanian language, represents the birth of a new country, its positive connotations, and the potential for a modern, democratic Kosovo. At its unveiling, it was announced that the letters would be repainted annually to celebrate another year of freedom.

People worked nonstop for 10 days to complete the monument so it could be unveiled on the day Kosovo formally declared independence. The 10-foot-tall, 79-foot-long monument is hard to miss, and it gained international attention as soon as it debuted.

The tradition to annually repaint the monument is still going strong today. One year, the monument was repainted to represent the flags of all the countries that recognized Kosovo’s...
