Beit Beirut, the House of Beirut, is a museum that focuses more on highlighting the building in which it is housed than on the exhibits inside. The building suffered tremendously during the long Lebanese Civil War which lasted more than 15 years (1975-1990). Being geographically situated on the so-called Green Line, the line that divided the city in two, the building got heavily damaged. Militias fought over it and built bunkers inside to defend their positions. Several bunkers inside have been kept as a grim reminder of the war. The outer walls have been purposely left without a full renovation. They show many shell and bullet holes. The metal patching that was done to make the building sound used gray metal to contrast with the original yellowstone facade. Keeping your mind from questioning the decisions that were made during the building's long recovery period will make your visit one to remember.

Every person living in Lebanon must visit Beit Beirut as it tells the unique history of Beirut. The museum is located in the historical Barakat building, which intersected the demarcation line (aka Green Line) between East and West Beirut during Lebanon’s 15-year Civil War. Beit Beirut is a symbolic representation of the city’s complex socio-political past, present, and perhaps future. Currently, there is an ongoing exhibition titled “Allo, Beirut?” which opened in September 2022. The entrance is free, and each display presents an interactive and immersive experience to learn about the city’s history, socio-cultural life, politics, economy, and geography. Kudos to all the curators and storytellers for creating a chilling exhibition that left us in awe!

Beit Beirut is a fascinating museum and urban cultural center located in the heart of Beirut, Lebanon. Housed in a former sniper's nest during the Lebanese Civil War, the building has been transformed into a space that celebrates the city's vibrant history, culture, and architecture. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, offering a unique perspective on the city's tumultuous past and its ongoing efforts to rebuild and renew. The center also hosts a variety of cultural events, including film screenings, concerts, and art exhibitions, making it a hub for creativity and community engagement. Overall, Beit Beirut is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the history and culture of Beirut.

When my sister mentioned to me this museum I honestly wasn’t expecting it to be like this! It was soo nostalgic, so real and authentic, i felt like i time traveled back in the days, at one point i started tearing up with a feeling i can’t describe some would say saudade (in Portuguese). A rush of chills came to me while looking at old records, hotel, restaurants, barber shop, photographer and so on. Listening to workers back in the day narrating everything they used to do for the guests! I can’t tell you what to expect but i think before going there, you must prepare yourself for a rush of feelings like no other! I highly recommend! Oh and did you know that it is also for FREE!

This museum and cultural center is a must go for foreigners and local residents. They hold exhibitions every now and then related to art, history, photography, and much more. I have attended a few events there, and at every time I get swamped by the beauty of the building, the mix of the old sandstone building and metallic structures. The building has survived the civil war and the Beirut blast. It is also at proximity of Sodeco's old cafés and restaurants, and at a walking distance from Monot. A must for your next trip to Beirut.

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at this place. The team were very polite and allowed us to browse the photography exhibit even though they were busy peeping for a UN visit. The blending of contemporary architecture and Green Line ruin creates a powerful metaphor for healing and also for the lingering presence of the Civil War’s trauma in the consciousness and civil society of Lebanon, reminiscent of Coventry Cathedral. A must visit, especially as it is half way between the National Museum and M. Sayhoun Falafel!
