The National Palace (Istana Negara) photo point is a must-visit landmark in Kuala Lumpur. The grand golden domes and beautiful gates provide an impressive backdrop for photos, and the entire area is immaculately maintained. Even though you can’t enter the palace itself, the main gate and its surroundings offer a strong sense of Malaysia’s royal heritage and national pride.

The highlight for us was seeing the mounted royal guards at the front entrance — just like the guards in London! They were on horseback, standing in full ceremonial uniform, and remained completely still, which made it feel very regal and unique. We were able to take some great photos with them and really appreciated the iconic setting.

There’s also a beautiful open plaza area with plenty of space for visitors, and clear signage in multiple languages. The views of the palace domes against the sky are especially striking on a clear day. It’s a quick stop, but definitely one that adds a memorable cultural touch to any KL itinerary.

Highly recommended for travelers looking for iconic photos, cultural significance, and a peaceful, scenic spot not far from...

"A Majestic Photo Spot Fit for Royalty!"

The National Palace (Istana Negara) photo point in Kuala Lumpur is a fantastic spot to capture the grandeur of Malaysia’s royal residence. The palace itself is a stunning architectural marvel with its golden domes and expansive grounds, providing a perfect backdrop for memorable photos. Although visitors aren’t allowed inside the palace, the designated photo area gives you a beautiful view of the palace façade and the guard posts.

It’s a great spot for families, solo travelers, and anyone wanting a royal touch to their travel photos. The royal guards, dressed in traditional attire, add to the experience and are often happy to be in pictures (from a respectful distance, of course!). A visit here doesn’t take much time, but it’s definitely worth it for the photos and the sense of Malaysia’s royal culture. If you’re exploring Kuala Lumpur, make...

The National Palace (Istana Negara) in Kuala Lumpur is one of the most iconic landmarks in Malaysia, and its photo point is a must-visit stop for travelers who want a glimpse of royal grandeur.

The highlight for most visitors is the changing of the guards, which adds a ceremonial touch and makes the experience feel lively. The guards in their crisp white uniforms on horseback are particularly photogenic. The palace grounds are immaculate, with well-maintained lawns and wide open spaces that make group shots and panoramic photos easy. visitors should be aware that this is strictly a photo stop—you can’t tour the palace interiors. Most people spend 20–30 minutes here before moving on. It’s best visited during daylight hours for clear pictures, though early morning or late afternoon provides...

Lucky enough to get to see the changing of the guard happening here. Sometimes depends on luck. There were days where the Kings Guard were not there because of some other events happening inside the palace not privy to the public. Saw several inconsiderate tourists trying to pull the reins of the horses... please don't be idiots and treat the guards and horses with respect if you come to visit. They had to add a red rope barrier in front of them not because the horses want to go out, but because tourists and their kids cannot behave themselves!! They are not toys for your amusement. The horses are beautiful and well behaved, they don't protest for a pat and the royal guards also don't mind if you want to interact with their horse... just please do so respectfully and with common sense.
