The whole place (Museum and Garibaldi Square) is a worthwhile experience. The museum I think was 65 pesos w/tasting included after.
The museum itself is good, though short and mostly what you could get from a 10 minute YouTube video on the subject. Then there is also a Mariachi / Garibaldi square exhibit. Then you go back down and taste one Tequila and one mezcal they've chosen. There is also a large shop attached with a lot of stuff including bottles of Tequila/Mezcal.
Then there's an attached museum bar that is nice but it would be REALLY NICE if they leaned into the museum relation with NOTES on the offerings or even better, curated FLIGHTS. Still, good stuff and the big thing in the mug I finished with was delicious (some kind of cactus water variation I believe), and that was the smaller size!
Garibaldi square itself... AKA Mariachi plaza, well, it lives up to the name, there are indeed a lot of Mariachis standing around, leaning on things. They weren't just playing, you basically have to commission a group (or they will come up to you and ask if you want them). But if you figure you will just show up and there will be live music... not on an overcast weekday evening at least. Maybe if you go at a busier time.
Don't get me wrong, I would have been happy to contribute to live music, just wasn't prepared to commission it!
Also, everything is going to be cash.
This starts to get to the edge of the area mostly safe for tourists to walk around. Getting here should be fine, getting back at night with a fair amount of Tequila in you... You...
Read moreA nice place to spend an afternoon downtown. The museum explains pretty well what tequila and mezcal are, how they used to be produced back in the day, how it’s done nowadays etc. But you’ll have to do the reading because there’s no guided tours. If you know nothing about tequila, you’re going to like it, but if you’ve visited Tequila in Jalisco or other places with tours, agave fields etc. I’d say skip it. The tasting is just two half-empty shots, but that’s alright with me, the entrance costs only $3USD. Didn’t like birria at the restaurant, and waitresses had a “ok whatever” attitude. This is not the safest neighborhood in the city, so don’t wander around, especially after sunset. If you go there during the day, it’s ok to walk. I’d rather uber there if it...
Read moreI had a great tour with Lemi (I think his name is spelled), it was worth it for the extra knowledge! I booked it online via getyourguide, as I couldn’t find tickets on the MUTEM site. I did my tour in spanish, so cannot vouch for english. Lemi was great & explained the whole process of tequila/mezcal/sotol making. After he explained everything, I took some time to take a few pictures. The tasting at the end was good as well, as he walked me through the different tasting notes. I also bought an extra shot/tasting of sotol because I wanted to try it, the price was very reasonable. I also want to shout out Ricardo, who was nice enough to help me out when my phone stated dying and my uber was on the way! He went out of his way to be...
