We had no idea what we were walking into. This is the pre-hispanic art that Rufino Tamayo collected to be put on display, so that it would be appreciated as art and not just artifacts. While other museums have collections of prehispanic pieces, this is the only one that displays them as art. It is a magnificent collection in a space that is a good fit. I would only hope it would be larger because I know there are many more pieces that need more space to be displayed. For one person to take on this task and do it so well is remarkable and so is the museum. Because we did not appreciate what was here we only had a little more than an hour. There is much more here than one hour will cover. In addition had an opportunity to meet with the director, who gave us the background of how this all came to be. There are Tamayo paintings here. They are elsewhere. But there is a series of lithos on the office wall that drew on prehispanic pieces, with Tamayo bringing them with some rework into the 20th century. Simply a...

This was one of the highlights of my trip to Mexico. I believe you can't really know a country unless you study its history. This museum gave me a huge boost in my knowledge of Mexico. One of the great things about this museum, over almost any other I've visited in Mexico, is the English language printed paper guides that they provide in each room. They describe virtually every item in the museum. Actually, without them, I probably wouldn't have understood, or therefore enjoyed, the museum very much. If you want to really experiance this place pick up a guide as you enter each room and proceed via its order. I don't know if admission is always free but...

Beautiful curated by Rufino Tamayo over a twenty year period with the objective to keep these pieces in Mexico. Educational Visually stunning Diverse and Free (DONATIONS ACCEPTED & NEEDED!) We spent about one hour to hour and half moseying around the various rooms. They’re stone walled with high ceilings. Everything is well lit. Periods posted And even if you don’t speak Spanish you can understand the time references and beauty and purpose to the living pieces. Well worth the time. Hopefully fills you with curiosity to explore more. Unusual hours of operation. Centrally located so you can check...

The open doorway caught my attention and the natural light in the courtyard intriged me. I favor homes and buildings with courtyards. I like the bull statue with the hands pushing away bad energy. Smoke was coming out of his barrel chest. I just stood in front of him, admiring the art, grinning. Then I entered the soft petal pink room to analize the art pieces of human form. Their thighs are huge ... probably the result of walking uphill carrying stuff. They probably also had strong gluts from walking uphill. Vhuntermassage LLC
