Café Bar Son Cubano — Restaurant in Oaxaca

In truth we did not go there to eat. I'm sure it has great bar food. If you want good food go to a restaurant. Oaxaca has several 😉. But if you want to enjoy life, go to Son Cubano. This was our night cap bar for a couple days while we stayed down the street. We had to pop in as we were celebrating our anniversary and we honeymooned in Cuba. We like all kinds of places, but we instantly knew we were in the kind of place that we actually end up hanging out in. Low light, an assortment of Cuban efemera that probly each have a story, well lived in digs. We were welcomed by a guy as warm as he is big, Lary (si me acuerdo bien). As we suspected, someone so at ease and friendly is the owner. And the bartender, his wife! So cute! .... whose name I forgot 😑. We got some beers and shots. VERY affordable. He sat us in front of the one large speaker, with facing it. My hearing is bad and getting worse after so many years working in venues. I HATE music so loud you have to yell. HATE it. Empty headed mouth breathers. Before our drinks landed, the music went way up as a music video came on the one big screen. I was bummed! But somehow I could still hear my woman, clearly, without her shouting! With a big speaker hovering over her head! I looked around, the ceiling is baffled. Not common in a casual place. Another night I asked, he said that he designed the sound for a space where people can socialize. Brilliant. We had several awesome nights bookended at Son Cubano. Next time, we're breaking out...

Sometimes you don't want to leave a place. Walked in around 6pm and we were the only ones in the place. Our server made us feel welcome and took care of us for the rest of the night, even as the place started to get packed. At 10 the band started and so did the dancing. Great service and decorations. Good music. This place has potential but: the cocktails were awful, including Micheladas, not a single item of Cuban food in the menu. Hence, except for the decorations and the music there is nothing Cuban about it on spite of the name. I dislike misleading names used as a trick to...
