Puerto Morelos is a fantastic, walkable town with delicious dining options—seafood, Italian, steak, Thai… something for everyone. The beach offers very low surf, perfect for relaxing, and during certain seasons you’ll see seagrass. But the real highlight is snorkeling: you have direct access to the longest and healthiest reef in the area—the Puerto Morelos Reef National Park, part of the Great Mesoamerican Barrier Reef! The protected reef starts just 400–500 m from shore at a shallow depth (~2 m), making it ideal for exploring colorful corals, tropical fish, turtles, and even rays . Local pangas depart from the town pier for about $20–25 USD per person with guide and gear included . It’s a magical underwater journey rich in marine life, with crystal-clear waters thanks to protected status . Perfect to pair with sunshine, beach vibes, great food, and an unforgettable dip beneath the waves.
Read moreGreat beach for swimming Went with Coopertiva (located 1 block inland from the lighthouse) on snorkeling tour to the reef, and highly recommend them. We spent much longer on reef than with the fancy big name companies but be aware that they use Pongas for boats and have to get your feet wet launching from beach. Bring your own snack and beverages and wear a swim shirt as sunscreen is not allowed. Seriously please do not wear sunscreen as the coral is already stressed and dying in many places. Snorkeling for 4 for $100, would have been $400 with the...

The lighthouse is so iconic, you will see pictures all over Puerto Morelos of it, as well as being on postcards, you can also find plenty of souvenirs. You can also see not far in the distance the original lighthouse, which doesn't get as much attention! Puerto Morelos is such a charming place. A place to go to switch of and enjoy the beauty of the...
