DON’T GO THERE- NON ANDATECI Disappointing experience and unprofessional staff

My visit to the walls of Kotor was definitely disappointing. I paid €15 per person for the entrance, expecting to be able to freely explore the area and visit the church included in the route. However, after just a few minutes, I realized that the path was extremely bumpy and not adequately marked. Furthermore, the church was closed, information that would have been useful to receive before purchasing the tickets.

I immediately pointed out the situation to the ticket office staff, who however did not want to refund my tickets, instead I was threatened when I screwed a family with 2 small children of the difficulties they would encounter. The staff thus showed a total lack of professionalism and respect towards tourists. I find it unacceptable that there was no transparency regarding the conditions of the path and the closures.

If you visit Kotor, I advise you to be careful before purchasing tickets for the walls. Unfortunately, the attitude of the staff in charge definitely ruined what could have been a beautiful experience. the price of 15€ per person is very high. NOT RECOMMENDED

Esperienza deludente e personale poco professionale

Robbed in broad daylight!!!

We saw on all information sources online that if you visit the city wall hike before 8am it would be free. We had a bus in the morning so we got to the entrance to the walk at 7:40 where there were no signs about it costing 15 euros or any opening times. We entered the walk and there were no staff present and the gates were not active so we got through with ease. As we were in a hurry we only went to the first view point and were back at the entrance at 7:50.

A staff member (I think Dorde) had just arrived at the booth with his t-shirt off and food and drink in hand. We tried to leave as it was before 8am and he aggressively blocked us off with his body.

He said we had to pay for tickets even though he wasn't set up and it was before 8am.

He claimed you had to pay if you entered after 7:30 although he wasn't there at 7:30 so there was no way for us to pay.

We told him this politely and he shouted at us saying we needed to pay.

We stood there for a while trying to reason with him that we had only spend 10 minutes at the site and that we wouldn't of come up if we knew we had to pay, but then he threatened to call the police on us.

Eventually we paid for our tickets as we were in a rush, and left very disappointed, as Kotor had been a lovely city and the people were all so nice up until this point. This left a sour taste in our mouth.

(This was on the 3rd...

STAFF INCREDIBLY RUDE AND THREATENED TO CALL POLICE.

We entered before 8AM as advised that it’s FREE ENTRY. We entered at 7am. Hiked to the top and came down at 8:30AM. As we came through the exit two guys stopped us, slammed the gate closed and blocked the walkway demanding we pay 15 euro each.

We explained that we were informed it’s free if you enter before working hours. Working hours start at 8 am. They told us they’ll call police if we don’t pay.

This was the most disgusting behaviour, we’ve never been treated liked this before. It is a disgust to Kotor. Such a beautiful city tainted by poor behaviour!

I ended up calling Kotor who translated for us and they said there was nothing we could do.

We ended up having to pay 30 euro for this hike. I completely understand supporting world heritage sites but commercialising it and charging a fortune like this is disgusting.

The two guys told us they didn’t care, that they’re doing their job, that apparently this is the rule. But there was nothing that explained any of this. There was one sign which said we had to pay within “working hours”. We entered outside of working hours.

By paying for this like this, the government will continue to hike up prices, charging tourists whatever they want for something that all people should be able to view for...

You can start either from the south gate or north gate. Those are the only 2 entrances along the seaside and part of north walls. From start yo finish should take about 15 minutes, casually. Nice view of the Bay of Kotor with many boats I can not afford, beautiful mountains that separate Kotor and Tivat, different perspective of old town from a second floor, the mountain paths that lead you to the castle on east mountain side. The fortifications of Kotor (Italian: Cattaro) are an integrated historical fortification system that protected the medieval town of Kotor containing ramparts, towers, citadels, gates, bastions, forts, cisterns, a castle, and ancillary buildings and structures. They incorporate military architecture of Illyria, the Byzantine Empire, Venice, and Austria. Together with the old town and its natural surroundings the fortifications were inscribed in the list of World Heritage Sites in 1979 labelled Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor and represent the only such site of cultural significance in Montenegro.

Kotor’s city walls are an absolute marvel—a breathtaking journey through history and nature combined! Rising gracefully from the shimmering Adriatic and winding up the mountains, they surround the charming Old Town like a protective embrace. Climbing the walls is an unforgettable adventure. Every step rewards you with even more stunning views of the terracotta rooftops, the glistening bay, and the majestic mountains. Reaching the fortress of St. John feels like stepping into a dream, especially at sunset, when the golden hues light up the entire landscape in the most magical way. The experience is pure joy for history lovers, adventure seekers, and photographers alike. With comfortable shoes, a bottle of water, and a sense of wonder, you’re guaranteed to create memories that last a lifetime. Kotor’s walls don’t just show you the past—they make you feel it, all while immersing you in the beauty of one of Montenegro’s most spectacular views. Have you made it to the top yet? It’s the kind of moment that stays with you forever!
