Villa Harris Museum — Attraction in arrondissement de Charf-Mghogha الشرف مغوغة

Villa Harris Museum is set in a large park of more than 10 hectares of landscaped gardens on Avenue Mohammed VI in the Malabata area of Tangier. The park surrounding Villa Harris Museum has well-maintained grass lawns, shrubs, flowers and palm trees that occupy the grounds of what was once the Moorish-style Villa Harris. It was built in the early 1900s by The Times of London English journalist Walter Burton Harris (1866-1933).

Villa Harris and its large gardens were transformed into a Club Méditerranée around 1970, and that all-inclusive tourist business was operational until 1992, when tragically, the villa was abandoned and it fell into disrepair through neglect and lack of maintenance.

Beginning around 2010, the historic abandoned and neglected Villa Harris was vandalized and looted of nearly all of its beautiful fixtures, including original marble fireplace mantles, doors, windows, floor tiles, etc., until all that remained was a run-down exterior shell of one of Tangier's most historic structures.

Fortunately, the architecturally significant home of Walter Harris was restored and rebuilt. In early March 2021, Villa Harris reopened to the public as a museum displaying paintings by Moroccan artists on its two floors.

While the rebuilt structure does not equal the architectural brilliance and painstakingly-built mosaics and plasterwork of the original home of Walter Harris, it is a good replica.

Harris’ grave and tombstone are in the cemetery of St. Andrew’s Church in Tangier.

Villa Harris Musée and its extensive gardens with hundreds of palm trees, flowers and meandering paths, are definitely worth visiting.

🔖 Villa Harris Museum is located in Malabata About 5 kilometers from the heart of Tangier towards the east. It is a building built by Walter Burton Harris, the correspondent for The Times newspaper in Morocco, at the end of the nineteenth century. فيلا هاريس” التي شيدها “والتر بورتون هاريس”، المراسل الصحفي لجريدة التايمز بالمغرب، في نهاية القرن التاسع عشر، بمالابطا إحدى المناطق الشهيرة بطنجة، أقيمت على مساحة تناهز 9 هكتارات، وهي ليست مجرد بناية للسكن وفضاءات خضراء للتنزه، بل هي جزء من الهوية التاريخية، ومرجعا أساسيا للدبلوماسية، كما أن موقعها يجمع بين تيمات متداخلة: التاريخ والذاكرة والسياسة والصحافة والحب والكراهية والمؤامرات.الفيلا كانت مقرا وطئه سفراء أجانب ورحالة مغامرون وجواسيس انجليز ورجال سياسة، وقد انتقلت ملكيتها من هاريس إلى مواطن اسباني، إذ يقال أنه باعها بسبب تراكم الديون المالية عليه، وقد حولها المالك الجديد إلى ناد للقمار، وفي ستينيات القرن الماضي انتقلت ملكيتها إلى نادي البحر المتوسط الذي حاول أن يجعل منها فضاء سياحيا حيويا، غير أنها تحولت إلى مكان مهجور بعد توقيف النادي لأنشطته بالمكان. ومن الواجب تثمين مبادرة تحويل البناية لمتحف فني والحديقة لمنتزه عمومي يضم موقف سيارات وملاعب للأطفال وممرات للمشي وكراسي للاستراحات.فيلا هاريس” ظلت مهجورة وخفية عن الأنظار، وقد أعيد ترميم البناية وتهيئة فضائها، وتم تسجيلها ضمن التراث الوطني، وبذلك غدت متحفا مفتوحا أمام الزوار والوافدين الراغبين في الاطلاع على المعلمة التاريخية من الداخل، وهي بناية أشرف على بنائها هاريس شخصيا، وجعل منها قصرا خاصا على النمط المعماري المغربي التقليدي، فقد أضفى عليه بهاء ورونقا من خلال الزخارف المنقوشة على الخشب والجبص، ويحيط بالبناية حديقة كبيرة على شكل واحة تقدر مساحتها بحوالي 9 هكتارات تضم أشجار ا نادرة مستوردة من عدد من البلدان الأجنبية، بالإضافة...
