Muchchundi Mosque (Muccundippalli) is believed to have been built in the 13th century C.E.The 13 th century bilingual stone inscription(Arabic on the right half and Malayalam Vattezhuthu script on the left half)fixed to the left of the entrance to the prayer hall states that Shihabuddin Raihan, freed slave of the late Mas'ud purchased the land, constructed the mosque and the well and provided for the Imam(prayer leader) and Muaddhin(muezzin). The day to day expenses of the mosque were met from a permanent grant made by the Zamorin. The inscriptions mention about the grant of a Naazhi(around 200g) of rice to the mosque from the agricultural lands in the nearby Kunnamangalam and Pulikeezhu. Another version states that, this mosque was originally the Muchchanthakath palace of the Zamorin, which was set on fire by the Portuguese under Marshall Manual Fernando De Coutinho on 4th Jan 1510 C.E.The Zamorin gifted the destroyed palace to the Arabs and Muslims to be used as the Mucchundi mosque. According to some, the mosque gets its name from Muchchiyan-a wealthy Arab trader who made significant endowments to the mosque.Others believe the mosque gets its name from the Tamil word for narrow lane (Chandu),since it is located at the junction of three (Moonnu)narrow lanes. An inscription in the mosque denotes the renovation carried out by Abdul Khader ibn Ibrahim Sahwa in 1682 C.E (A.H 1093). The mosque housed luminaries like Sheikh Zainuddin Makhdoom II(1531-1583 C.E)-the author of Tuhafat-ul-Mujahidin ,Sheikh Sadaqathulla Appa(1632-1703 C.E),the celebrated Qadri sufi scholar of Kayalpatanam and Mahakavi Moyinkutty Vaidyar(1852–1892 C.E).Moyinkutty vaidyar is believed to have completed the Uhud padappattu while staying at the first floor of the mosque.Students from far and wide including Lakshadweep islands used to attend the religious classes held at this mosque till the end of 17 th century C.E.The front courtyard of the mosque has exquisitely carved wooden panels with arabic inscriptions. At present, prayers are conducted only in the ground floor of this two storeyed building. Unfortunately, some of these beautifully carved arabic letters on the wooden panel have been destroyed by the ravages of time and the present mosque managers are unable to find the required expertise to restore the damaged...
