I love this church - it’s a great marker for where you are when in Alkmaar, it has an incredibly interesting and rich history that connects to the major episodes of the city and of the Netherlands more broadly, and it has a wonderful and important organ inside that we had the luxury of hearing for free one afternoon at one of the many performances that are programmed throughout the year.
We got an impromptu tour from Nick, who was an incredibly passionate and erudite historian - he took us on a fantastic journey through the centuries in the church and surrounding area. A true highlight of our trip.

Read moreGorgeous old church with marvelous architecture that has repurposed to be museum; to fully appreciate what this place have, I suggest you follow trail in flyer that you can pick in entrance; It have enormous musical instruments with steel pipes, historic painting of heaven and hell in the ceiling, many gravestones, carving, small clock in the center of the church, educational interactive screens that explain the history of this church, clean toilet, merchandise and coffee shop. Read moreVery quiet place to walk around and catch a break from the busy Alkmaar centre. Free toilets and a coffee bar. And because it is also a museum it has a kiosk with souvenirs.
Juli 2023 the saffolding was up for repairs on the main stained glass window. Too bad we didn't get to seemit, but we did get to take a €5 climb up the scaffolds to get to the top and inspect the buildings facade and enjoy the views.
