I highly recommend this museum. For just 12€ for a family card you're getting a lot... There are art galleries with changing subjects, very well done, a permanent exhibition of the "Bergense School" (expressionism), one about how Alkmaar developed from ten farms to a city of 100,000 citizens and about Alkmaar's golden age. But the best, in my opinion, was the exhibition about the spanish siege. This was brilliant... Along a red line you're guided through history accompanied by small, very well made video clips (dubbed in English) combined with exhibits. So you learn how the people of Alkmaar made Spanish to dismiss their siege. I've never seen anything similar before, very entertaining and a must see. Last but not least, the staff was very helpful. * Update 2019 * However, two years later I had to pay the double price (24€) for two adults and two children (11+9). I don't know if it was a special offer two years ago, but the price remains reasonable, especially if compared to the museums...
Read moreIt's a nice museum overall located close to the centre of Alkmaar. On a regular day, it's not much of a collection. It contains lots of paintings and a few artefacts on its two floors. The basement floor is dedicated to the history of Alkmaar, and visitors can get an audio guide at the reception (both in English and Dutch) to help with this. On the weekend I visited, there was none, so I didn't get the chance to visit that section. In all, the museum is not the most stocked, and a visitor can go through the entirety of the place within 1 and a half to 2 hours (when there is no...
