De Oosterpoort — Attraction in Groningen

I had the incredible opportunity to attend Devin Townsend’s world-exclusive rock opera, The Moth, at De Oosterpoort in Groningen on March 27, 2025, alongside the Noord Nederlands Orkest, and I can’t say enough good things about the venue itself.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime performance, with Townsend’s visionary blend of heavy metal, progressive rock, and ambient music brought to life by a 70-piece orchestra, a 60-member choir, and his own band. De Oosterpoort proved to be the perfect setting for such an ambitious show.

The acoustics in the Grote Zaal were fantastic—every note, from the soaring vocals to the intricate orchestral arrangements, came through with stunning clarity. The sound design handled the complexity of a rock opera with heavy metal elements seamlessly, ensuring that neither the orchestra nor Townsend’s band overpowered the other.

The layout of the venue was equally impressive. With 1,100 standing spots and 700 seats, the space felt intimate yet spacious, allowing for an immersive experience whether you were standing close to the stage or seated further back. I opted for a standing spot, and the sightlines were excellent—I could see every detail of the performance, from Townsend’s emotive delivery to the orchestra’s dynamic movements.

De Oosterpoort is also incredibly well-organized. The doors opened at 7:00 PM, and the process was smooth, with staff efficiently managing the crowd. The concert started promptly at 8:15 PM and ended around 10:45 PM, as scheduled, which speaks to the venue’s tight operations. The staff were friendly and helpful, ensuring everyone found their spots without hassle. The venue’s location on Trompsingel 27 is convenient, with easy access to public transport, which was a plus after a long night of music.

Overall, De Oosterpoort delivered an exceptional experience for this historic performance. The combination of fantastic acoustics, a well-thought-out layout, and top-notch organization made it the ideal venue for Devin...

I had a really great experience at De Oosterpoort attending the Dotan concert! Getting there was easy, minding the fact that the adjoining car park is currently closed, there are two others in walking distance. The front hall when first entering was clean and lockers, that size-wise could probably be used by multiple people if you came with friends, were readily available for only 3€. I would say it’s a luck thing since I got one of the top lockers which was hard for me to reach but there was staff milling about that I’m sure would’ve helped if I needed it. The lockers had great instructions on usage and it’s safe to say that I had no issues before or after the show. The venue itself was clean for the most part other than the floors being sticky but I guess that’s expected if you’re allowed to bring drinks in. I can’t say how the show sounded further back but from my spot relatively close to the stage it sounded amazing and was just an overall lovely time. Dotan and his band were one of the most genuine people I’ve ever watched give a concert and I have no bad feelings about my experience going to a concert here!! Ik mis op de site maar ook bij bezoek aan de Oosterpoort informatie, over de kosten van garderobe en consumpties. Waarom is alles zo duur? Oordopjes kosten 3 euro. Ik ben net naar een concert van Me'shell Ndegeocello geweest, indrukwekkend! Maar het geluid was te hard. In maart was ik naar Angie Stone, waar het zo hard was dat het overal in de zaal vervormde. Ik ben halverwege weggegaan. Het was absoluut boven de 85 db beide keren. Boven de 100 denk ik, in vergelijking met Paradiso waar je ook op display kunt zien dat het 100 db is, op houseparties die 11 uur duren. Geen last, ook niet achteraf. Daar is de garderobe en consumpties ook aanzienlijk goedkoper. En ze hebben naast oordopjes die je moet betalen ook gratis voor eenmalig gebruik!

Bij binnenkomst werd ik in het Engels aangesproken. Wat als je amper of geen Engels spreekt?? Ik kreeg een muntje, voor een gratis consumptie, dacht ik.... voor een icetea moest ik tocch 2,85 betalen. Zonder uitleg. Stond ook nergens aangegeven wat er te drinken was en dus wat het kostte ( maar een biertje was meer dan 5 euro, wist ik nog. In Paradiso ook veel minder).

Ik wilde tussendoor even naar huis om te eten, en omdat er pas later op de avond een voor mij interessante act was. Ik vroeg of ik dan weer 3 euro moest betalen. Ja, tenzij ik even zou gaan roken. Maakt het ene moer uit waarvoor ik naar buiten ga en voor hoe lang? ? Voor deze keer deed het meisje of ik even zou gaan roken. Wat betuttelend. Dus rokers worden beloond? Terwijl we naar een rookvrije maatschappij willen?

Ik moest een stempel halen bij de security, die mij nors meedeelde dat ze niet zomaar stempels uitgaven ( te duur zeker), alleen als ik wegging. Je krijgt er toch geen gratis consumptie mee? Ik had mijn jas aan. Maar ik ga ook weg, zei ik. Ik wilde de stempel op mijn hand maar met wederom een kwaaie kop werd zonder een woord gebaard dat die op mijn onderarm moest. Wat maakt dat uit? Thuis was de inkt versmeerd. Ik durfde niet terug want stel dat dit niet werd geaccepteerd?

Maar mijn avond was toch al verpest. Het concert van Ibrahim Malouf dat om. 21.45 zou beginnen heb ik vervangen door live footage van hem op Youtube. Jammer want erg mooi. Maar ook vast weer veel te luid.

Zonde van mijn geld. En oren.

Licht aub bezoekers beter voor, zowel op de website als bij binnenkomst, en in het Nederlands. Doe iets aan de gastvrijheid, prijzen en herrie want het kan gewoon zachter. Ik heb in het verleden zonder gehoorproblemen genoten van wereldacts als Laurie Anderson en Air genoten. Als ik fitness heb ik een overear koptelefoon op met techno maximaal veilig volume dus ik kan wel wat hebben.

Ik vergelijk met Paradiso omdat ik geen andere zaal ken, je zou verwachten dat het juist daar duurder zou zijn en het ook een zeer goed aangeschreven muziekcentrum is, met dus ook professionele apparatuur en...
