Many people visit Rotterdam for the first time and hear the story on how it was bombarded and rebuilt from ashes as a new modern, incredible and wonderful city.

But, not many stopped to wonder how would Rotterdam look if it were preserved like many other European cities.

Well, Delfshaven can give you a pretty good idea. Delfshaven is actually the old port of Delft (located a bit up on Rotterdam) which was built because Delft didn’t want to pay Rotterdam expensive shipping taxes.

It’s a walk of two streets, that have a bit of everything: wind mills (mollen), bridges, old buildings, and of course the port itself, with some old ships that are being taken care of by their owners.

Some of the highlights here are the first brewery in Rotterdam, the pinball museum, the church where the pilgrims gather to depart to new lands, a mollen where you can go up and get a nice view of the whole area, some old factory chimneys, etc.

Of course there are also bars and cafes all around. I recommend the “Stadsbrouwerij de Pilgrim”, the first brewery in Rotterdam.

The area is just an incredible experience that will let you travel through time. Tip: visit...

This beautiful historical borough of Rotterdam wasn't always part of Rotterdam. Back in the 14th century Delft wasn't connected to water so it built this harbour 10 kilometers away from the city of Delft, thus creating the name 'Delfshaven' which translates into 'the harbour of Delft'

In the 17th century, pilgrims used this harbour to travel and colonise Plymouth, Massachusetts in the USA.

Piet Hein, an Admiral during the Dutch 80 year war in the 17th century who captured the Spanish treasure fleet from America, was born here.

It is a lovely historic area interesting buildings to walk through. Definitely a big difference from the modern looking city...

Historisch Delfshaven” refers specifically to the oldest, most picturesque part of that area. It includes old harbors, canals, historic houses, bridges, and small streets offering a very different feel from the modern centre of Rotterdam. A mix of scenic canals and harbors, old façades, small alleys, historic churches, and modern touches. Many cafés, galleries, bars, boutique shops. It’s quiet in some corners, lively near the water.
