It's not often I am disappointed with what I presume is a well respected art gallery but this happened to be one of those times.

We attended Kunsthal Rotterdam on a Sunday, perhaps a Sunday is the time for Rotterdamers to attend galleries and that would explain why it was so busy. Showing at the time of our visit were Refek Anadol and Ai Wei Wei.

Let's start with the Refek Anadol show in Hall 1. It resembled a collection of computer-generated moving 'paintings' in a darkened hall with parque flooring. The website stated "let yourself be carried away by a visual spectacle" I was carried away straight through and out of the exit. I am open to all mediums and enjoy conceptual work but this resembled a high spec selection of Windows screensavers. It was art for Instagram and did not inspire or intrigue me, the incorporation of AI generated work also irked me.

Then trying to traverse through the extremely poorly signposted and cramped spaces to the Ai Wei Wei show was both stressful and a further taste of what was to come.

I have a great respect for Ai Wei Wei, he challenges power, our concepts of history and existence and his work highlighting social injustice is very much needed, the show however was cramped, very poorly signposted with text sometimes disjointed from the art work. There was also a tendency due to space for readers of the room text to block off art works. For instance I saw nothing of the photographs from 80s New York as I simply couldn't get to them. Works were crammed in and not given the space needed to breath. Viewers were channeled through a particular path and it felt like a hurried enforced journey.

The entrance is cramped with people attempting to exit the building as the signage to the actual exit behind the curtain is incredibly poor. There existed an auditorium with rows upon rows of seating facing a window, it seemed a perfectly wasted space considering the amount of work crammed into the actual gallery halls.

Finally there only happened to be one working sink in the male toilet.

I can only compare my disadain for this place as equal to Moco Museum in Amsterdam from a previous visit last year. €16.50 is certainly not value for money and it encouraged me to view our free and spacious art establiments in London with a newly...

At the entrance I put my bag and coat in a (free) locker, a lower one. When I got back up, a stupid person had opened the locker above me, so I banged my head into the locker door, resulting in a bump. Bad start. The (free) headphone was rather heavy, and did not fit well. The DIVA exhibition was nice, but music was not very well synchronised. Some stars I could not even find, as the names were not very well placed. You are expected to know them, I guess. Dolly Parton, I did hear her music, but did not find the costume. Some of the displays are so bright, they reflect terrible in the glass in front of others. You have to go close to read things, standing in front of other people watching, and fitting the music to the star. I expected much better lay out. The filmclips of big stars were nice, but not sure who was who. Impossible to find the info. I am pleased I had free entrance with my city pass, and did not need to pay €18. The rest of the exhibitions were insignificant, or closed. I guess it...

Dritte Station: Stephan Balkenhol.
