Delftsche Poort: A Gate Between History and Modernity

Rotterdam doesn’t rebuild the past — it reimagines it. A perfect example is the Delftsche Poort, a bold orange steel sculpture designed in 1995 by local artist Cor Kraat. It stands about 150 meters from Central Station, marking the former location of one of the city’s most important historical gates.

Rather than recreating the gate stone by stone, Kraat chose to evoke its shape and scale with modern materials — almost like a ghost of the past, drawn in bold lines. The original Delftsche Poort was destroyed in the 1940 bombing, but its memory lives on through this symbolic reconstruction. Walk through it, and you’re quite literally stepping through layers of history.

Across from the station, you’ll also notice a large office skyscraper — also called Delftsche Poort. The naming isn’t a coincidence: it honours the same historical gate and the route travelers once took from Delft into the city. The skyscraper, completed in 1991, is a sleek example of Rotterdam’s postwar architectural ambition, and now shares its name and location with Kraat’s artistic tribute nearby.

Rond 1373 was er al sprake van een Delftse Poort. In 1545 werd de poort vervangen door een nieuw exemplaar. Vanaf de bouw in 1768 was de Delftse Poort, naar een ontwerp van architect Pieter de Swart, het bekendste bouwwerk in de stad. Eind jaren dertig werd de poort verplaatst in het kader van de herinrichting van het Hofplein. Tijdens het bombardement in 1940 werd de Delftse Poort vernietigd. Cor Kraat maakte een staalconstructie, die aan alle zijden open is en plaatste het op de oorspronkelijke locatie. Het bouwwerk oogt als een driedimensionale grafische tekening. De neoklassieke vooroorlogse poort lag ten grondslag aan zijn ontwerp. De poort met het karakter van een kunstwerk in aanbouw, staat symbool voor het feit dat Rotterdam nog steeds aan het bouwen is. Op de oude poort stonden vier personificaties: de personificatie van Handel en Verkeer, de stedenmaagd, de Maas en de Rotte. Deze figuren keren gestileerd terug op de moderne poort. Dit beeld laat door de verbeelding van de oude stadspoort het Rotterdam van de 18e eeuw zien. Cor Kraat (Rotterdam, 1946) volgde van 1965 tot 1971 een opleiding aan de Rotterdamse Academie van Beeldende Kunsten. Van 1979 tot 1992 werkte Kraat in het kunstenaarscollectief Kunst & Vaarwerk met Hans Citroen en Willem van Drunen. Kunst & Vaarwerk legde zich toe op monumentale kunst in de stad.
