One of my favorite places in Rotterdam where the local market is. Trading days are Tuesdays and Saturdays until about 15h00. Almost any thing from a pin to an kewoepi is for sale there. The Turkish and Maroccan tradesmen know there fruit, veggies nuts and seeds very well and are such friendly and humorous folk. I find their produce of much better quality and price than the super market. There are excellent fresh fish stalls as well as dutch cheese providers. Don't forget to treat yourself with a freshly backed stroopwafel (delicious Dutch delicacy). The Bramladage is famous for their freshly fried potato chips and if you are from a foreign land you might as well try their crochet's too. All of these Dutch delicacies are very cheap ( nothing more than € 2 or 3 ) Further more there are excellent linen and clothing available. Also worh mentioning are the fabric stalls situating next to the library where you can find real bargains and unique fabrics for clothing as well as upholstery. In general I experience the marketplace staff far more friendlier and as a foreigner much easier to find stuff that are not available in the normal stores like the small white Thai aubergine; paw paw, extra large watermelons from Italy or...
Read moreUsed to be nicer. We were here a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Now everything has gotten much more expensive, which would be ok if the quality would still be the same. But almost everything we bought was mouldy the following day. Even the cheese. It looked fine when we bought it. Also the vendors used to be nicer. Now it seems that everyone is in a hurry and has no time to talk, some are even very rude. The only really nice stall was in the beginning on the left side. A stall that sells nuts and dried fruit. The lady was really nice and we got some amazing raisins. And because they where for our son she even gave us some extra for...
Read moreThis is Rotterdam’s biggest public street market. It happens every Tuesday and Saturday, full day. The place to go for a real taste of Rotterdam with all its diversity. Bargain prices for fresh products like cheese, fish, fruits, vegetables, spices and flowers. But also many other products and bric & brac to be found.
Recommended to eat a portion of ‘kibbeling’ (fried fish fillet chunks) at one of the fish stalls.
Also the place to buy your Dutch cheese: the more mature the cheese is, the more flavourful, ranging from ‘jong’ (young), ‘belegen’, ‘extra belegen’, to ‘oud’ (old). I prefer the extra belegen or oud for their full creamy and...
