Te Whare Karakia o Kororareka / Christ Church is New Zealand's oldest surviving church 😮 located in the village of Russell.

The Anglican church ⛪️ was built in 1835 by Gilbert Mair under the supervision of Charles Baker (later Reverend), and originally held services in both English and Māori ❤️ The church was built with a simple design and hipped roof. It was also occasionally used as the local courthouse ⚖️

In the early 19th century, Russell, then known as Kororareka, was used as a safe harbour by whalers 🐋 The land for the church was purchased in 1834 from local chiefs on the condition that Māori and Pākehā (non-Māori) would have the same right to burial 🪦

The church was damaged in the Battle 🪖 of Kororareka in 1845 by musket and cannonballs and some bullet holes are visible in the front facade. Tāmati Wāka Nene, a Māori chief who fought for/with the British 🇬🇧 in that conflict, is buried in the church graveyard.

In the early 1870s, the church was given its current name and extended with a belfry.

In 2000 the church was restored and is now also a tourist attraction 👥👥 The church continues to be in weekly use for Anglican worship, with services each Sunday at 10.30am, and some services in Te Reo Māori, and is a venue for weddings 👰💍🤵‍♂ funerals and other special services. It has been speculated that the church is the oldest building in New Zealand that is still being used for its original...

Christ Church in Russell, New Zealand, is more than just a place of worship—it's a powerful historical landmark that carries a deep sense of peace and spirituality. As the oldest surviving church in New Zealand, built in 1835, it has stood as a symbol of faith and resilience for nearly two centuries.

Despite being a Buddhist, I couldn’t help but feel something special upon visiting. There is a quiet, almost divine presence that makes you pause and reflect. The church's simple yet beautiful design, surrounded by an old graveyard with headstones dating back to the early 19th century, adds to its charm. Whether you're drawn to history, spirituality, or just looking for a peaceful place to sit and absorb the atmosphere, Christ Church is a...

A Beautiful small Historic Church in the First Capitol of New Zealand. I was there for the memorial service for a dear friend who had been deeply involved with the Church for 20 years. It was a beautiful day and the sun shone through the windows. The atmosphere was serene and comforting. It is one of the main attractions of Russell and delightful in its peace...

I visited this spot during my Northland trip. It was good to see the first church of New Zealand. There was no one inside and the doors were open to everyone. There is a $2 donation box which could be used to donate $2 that goes towards various maintenances. There were many graves dating back to the 1800s. This place talks a lot about history. Would highly recommend! Cheers
