A must visit for understanding the early colonials and Maori interactions. IF DRIVING: Google Maps does NOT show the turnoff or small road to the parking. From Russell up Flagstaff Road is two way. The turn to the road up to the park is signposted but sudden and narrow; approach slowly! This short connecting road to the parking is steep and narrow, basically one lane. Parking is limited although I haven't seen it fill. You can drive and park a medium campervan however I suggest walking up will be better. There are two areas to explore, the flagstaff and on the other side of the parking and a minute up are historical storyboards plus a mosaic map under your feet, and a sundial in the centre. Every kiwi...
Read moreA hugely significant site in Aotearoa/New Zealand’s history. An interesting place to visit given its past. There is some interpretation at the site to give you a brief understanding of the history. On a fine day offers amazing panoramic view of the bay. A short walk or drive up from Kororāreka/Russell, about 15-20min walk up the road, ~30mins through the bush. The bush track can be uneven and muddy so be careful if you are unsteady. The wayfinding signs through the bush track are a little confusing as they all seem to say 30mins to Russell at every point along the track. Signposted as a Kiwi area, could be interesting to listen out for...
Read moreWell worth the trip up the hill to the Flag Staff. This spot has a lot of history for NZ from the early arrival of Europeans, and the interactions with the locals. It is the site of the first official Signal Flagstaff in NZ put up shortly after the signing of the Treaty in 1840. This is the site of the flag staff that was cut down 4 times in the early years through to 1845. There are great views up here, and also some details as to the history of the site. I had been to Russell 3 or 4 times in the past, but never went up the hill, wish I had in the past, as the views are...
