Pothichor — Attraction in Christchurch

Overall giving you 5 star.

Few things went wrong but the food made it up for everything.

Things went wrong: -

Went with family and requested a table for four people and kept waiting for someone to come over for order and then went upto the counter; then on asking they said we need to order at the counter and then the order will come out at the table. It's a restaurant and not a takeaway as it had lots of tables and chairs for eating in.

The only form of ordering is to look at the TV screen and order from it. No menu is printed or to look at. That means anyone having no idea about the food will have to ask lots of questions at the counter while ordering and lots of people will be waiting behind you giving you pressure to finish your order quicker and ending up not doing justice to your orders and you will just hope that those quick questions you have asked for your order is enough!!

We had to wait for over 45 minutes to get our orders after requesting for several times to get our food out. It was getting busier as the above mentioned two points are responsible for the slow service. On top only one person trying to do the front of house and three people in the kitchen trying to cope with orders. If getting labour expense is not an option then print some menu and take table orders rather than people coming to you.

Charged us $2 more in error and after double checking refunded $2. Calculation error. Understandable.

No toilet inside the restaurant.

Things that made up everything: -

All food we ordered were absolutely delicious and we now don't regret the wait time. It was worth the wait.

An apology dessert was offered for the delay in service. That was definitely a nice gesture. Goes a long way. The Front of house guy was well mannered.

While paying for food I wanted to pay cash and had 10 cents short. So wanted to pay the 10 cents via card. The guy taking the payment said not to worry about the 10 cents. So technically he charged me $1.90 extra but when refunding he gave $2 not $1.90. Since I have covered all negative points; it's only fare to cover this positive bit too.

It was a lot of food for $73 with a complimentary dessert. In this expensive market; this place definitely provides value for money and delicious quality food.

Was easy to park and get to the restaurant.

So out of 10 points 5 of positive has taken over the 5 negatives and therefore its a 5 star overall. Will definitely return for the food. As a customer we expect to get a little bit of service at a restaurant and that is why we come to a restaurant to eat; otherwise we can cook at home right?

If this restaurant improves the 1st two points on the negatives section that I have pointed out then this will be one of the best South Indian Restaurant in Christchurch. Rest of the other things are not that...

I have been in search for good keralan food as I have been craving. I have worked with a lot of lovely people from Kerala whilst in Kuwait and they have introduced me to the wonderful, tasty Keralan cuisine. Since moving to NZ 8 years ago, the closest I could get to that taste is going to local indian takeaways, until Pothichor came. Wow! Just mind blown. Beautiful food! Very delicious, and perhaps I can say authentic. The depth of flavor is comforting. The seasoning is just right. Temperature is just right.

For first timers I suggest you try the Pothichor, it is a good introduction to Keralan food with it's different viand over rice. If you are unsure how to eat the other items on the menu like dosa, puttu, idli (all delicious btw), search a video in youtube, it'll show you. Their sambar and coconut chutney are the best I ever had in Christchurch! Looking forward to trying their Parotta with curry next time.

This place is a marvel, feels like home cooking---you can feel the food. Whoever the chef is, kudos to you. The lady who took my order was pleasant. They are available in uber eats, and also posts their daily menu in facebook. I am hooked and addicted. Too happy with their food that I just needed to post this. Thanks Pothichor and keep on going!

The only reason I only put 4 stars is because the interior of the resto could do some work, and no dessert in the menu. Yet in saying so, this does not affect the wonderful food they serve. Food and service I will rate 10/5...

We’ve always loved South Indian food, especially the fish, which is why we regularly ordered from Potichor with our family. The food has always been good in the past — but this time was such a disappointing experience that we won’t be returning.

We ordered through Uber Eats, and the fish that arrived was extremely cold, stale, and clearly not fresh — completely inedible. We called the restaurant to inform them, and the person on the phone casually said, “Just microwave it for 2 minutes bro.” We explained that we had paid for fresh food, but he insisted it was made fresh “today,” which is already concerning for seafood. When we questioned the freshness, he said he’d bring new fish to “see who’s lying,” but he never showed up.

It’s really disappointing to see how the quality and customer service have declined. We used to love this place, but after this experience, we’ll unfortunately never order from...
