My visit to the Redwood Treewalk in Rotorua was nothing short of magical. Nestled within the towering redwoods, this experience offers a unique perspective on nature that truly immerses you in the beauty and serenity of the forest. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the peaceful atmosphere and the sheer scale of the trees, which felt almost otherworldly.
The Walk:
The walk itself is an enchanting journey through the canopy of these majestic trees. The suspension bridges are beautifully designed and blend seamlessly with the environment, allowing you to feel at one with nature. The path is well-marked and the bridges are sturdy, providing a sense of security even for those who may be a bit wary of heights. The entire experience is incredibly tranquil, with the sounds of the forest creating a calming backdrop as you make your way through the treetops.
Night Walk:
I highly recommend experiencing the Treewalk both during the day and at night. During the day, the sunlight filtering through the leaves creates a vibrant and lush atmosphere, but it’s the night walk that truly sets this experience apart. As the sun sets, the forest transforms into a magical wonderland with the addition of artistic lighting installations. The illuminated lanterns and ethereal lighting effects bring a whole new dimension to the experience, casting the trees in a soft, glowing light that feels almost mystical. It’s like stepping into a fairytale, where every corner reveals a new and captivating scene.
Educational Elements:
Throughout the walk, there are informative signs that provide insight into the history of the forest and the significance of the redwoods. These educational elements enhance the experience by deepening your understanding of the environment and the efforts taken to preserve it. It’s both an enlightening and humbling experience, reminding us of the importance of conservation.
Accessibility and Amenities:
The Treewalk is well-suited for people of all ages and fitness levels. The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to assist and ensure that everyone has a memorable experience. The visitor center offers a range of amenities, including clean restrooms, a well-stocked gift shop, and a cozy café where you can relax and enjoy a warm drink after your walk.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, the Redwood Treewalk in Rotorua is an experience that should not be missed. Whether you’re a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, this attraction offers something for everyone. It’s a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and education, all set in one of New Zealand’s most beautiful forests. I left feeling rejuvenated, inspired, and deeply connected to the natural world. Read moreI booked the Day & Night Combo, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable highlights of my trip. Experiencing the forest in both daylight and after dark felt like visiting two completely different worlds.
🌞 Daytime Walk
The daytime walk was calm, refreshing, and a chance to truly appreciate the natural beauty of the towering redwoods. Walking along the suspension bridges, high among the treetops, gave me a unique perspective of the forest floor below and the incredible height of the trees above. The light filtering through the canopy created a peaceful atmosphere, and I had plenty of time to slow down and soak it all in.
The design features along the walk — including the wooden lanterns and artistic touches — blended seamlessly with the lush ferns and native plants. Even in daylight, these installations added colour and character to the natural landscape.
🌌 Nighttime Walk
Once the sun went down, the forest completely transformed. Hundreds of lanterns designed by David Trubridge lit up the night in intricate patterns and soft glows, giving the forest an enchanting, almost magical feel. Walking across the bridges at night felt like entering a fantasy world — glowing shapes hanging among the trees, a giant illuminated bird in flight, and the forest floor bathed in vibrant lighting.
What I loved most was the contrast: during the day, it’s about appreciating nature’s raw beauty; at night, it’s about immersing yourself in an art installation that brings the forest alive in a new and unexpected way.
💡 Overall
The Day & Night Combo is the best way to experience the Redwoods Treewalk because it shows you two sides of the same forest — one tranquil and grounding, the other magical and dreamlike. The staff were welcoming, the walkways felt safe but adventurous, and the entire experience was well worth it.

Read moreMy family (2 adults and 2 children) visited the Treewalk last night. My husband is a wheelchair user so was unable to do the walk. However he was able to go up the spiral to the starting point for a bit of a look around at the start for free. It was great that he was able to do a small part to be more involved in the family activity. The staff working were absolutely fantastic and extremely helpful. They went out of their way to make sure the experience was smooth for us all. This including arranging for easy access for us all to the activity, taking our photo on the first platform and helping my husband down the spiral. My children and I enjoyed the walk and lights. It was very busy but it didn't feel crowded on the walk as you get broken into groups. The walk opened at 9pm and we got there at 8.30pm. There was a children's movie play while we waited in line which was great for the kids to watch while I held the place in line. My husband got actually see it from the car also. We were told with our place in line we would be waiting until about 9.40-10pm to start the walk and then the walk was about 40 mins. It was going to be a long wait for my husband but they very kindly called us to go up a bit earlier meaning that we were all done by 10.15pm. Despite the crowds it felt peaceful. There was one mobility car park at the entrance which made very easy access for my husband who waited in the car. The one thing that could be improved with the car park was the positioning of a large pot plant on the left side of the car park where a side entry vehicle hoist or ramp would go. We worked around this by moving slightly onto the no parking area beside the park but it would be great if the one pot in the way was moved a little. Thank you so much to all the amazing staff that made this such a positive experience...
