While not an engineer, I have some ability to appreciate engineering. I have a particular respect for very old engineering, because so much was achieved with so little, compared to today. It was a rainy day and having most of the exhibit under roof was also nice. I visited the museum for an open day. The boiler was running and the volunteers at the museum pressured up 5 different steam engines to show them in gentle action. A black smithing shop was also in action and several families with children under 10 were showing their fascinated primary school kids things they would never have seen before. The staff and volunteers were all enthusiastic about their interests and I learned some amazing things, both about the history of dunedin and early engineering and industrialisation. How reticulated gas was governed throughout Dunedin was amazing. I would recommend this to any family looking for an hour or two seeing some amazing things that their kids will love. All the machines were running, which was a treat as they aren't always, and I got to pull the cord to make the whistle on the steam plant go, so really it was a 5+ star experience for me.
