A highlight of visiting Ålesund is the view from Aksla Lookout Point (Aksla Utkikkspunkt) and walking down (or up) the 418 steps between Ålesund CBD and Mount Aksla.
We were staying midtown, so walked up the quiet backstreets (Setrevegen, Fjelltunvegen) and trails to Mount Aksla. From there, we followed the pleasant wooded trail west to Aksla Utkikkspunkt. Later, we walked down the steps to Ålesund CBD.
The wooded trail from Aksla Dam to the lookout point (Utkikkspunkt) was very enjoyable and not particularly busy until 100 metres from the lookout area. Also a couple of viewing spots along that trail. I think most folks take the tour train along Fjelltunvegen, and some walk along that road unaware of the trail the parallels the road.
Aksla Utkikkspunkt and the 418 steps were understandably busy at the end of July but wasn't overwhelming (we saw two massive cruise ships docked below, and might have been others). A few very small stopping areas along the steps. Walking down (rather than up) the 418 steps seems to be an advantage because you are constantly facing different perspectives of the spectacular view.
Visited at end...
Read moreFantastic viewpoint, well worth the 440 odd steps to get to the top (with plenty of places to sit and rest on the way). Take your time and it is a very enjoyable attraction.
There is a local hop on hop off bus ride if you can't face the climb or the descent, and a little road train that also goes up and down.
The main area at the top has a cafe and gift shop (plus toilets for patron use). There is a small charge to access the main viewing platform (we didn't use this).
There are several areas at the top where different views are on offer around the Alesund area, so it is worth a bit of an explore once at the top. There are also several trails to explore if you have the time (and the energy).
We were very lucky with the weather so the views spectacular. Definitely will be back if we visit Alesund again...
Read moreWonderful views from this outlook at the top of mount Aksla in all directions, out to sea and over Alesund. You need to climb 418 steps to reach the top, but these are in a good condition and numbered at intervals so that you know your progress. There are several resting points on the way up where you can take in the views too. At the top there is a restaurant which was closed when we were there, but panoramic views are available. It was a sunny day during our visit with glorious blue skies over the sea. To return you can go back down the steps, or wander down woodland behind on a more gradual return to Alesund itself. At the bottom of the steps is a pleasant park with a statue of Rollo the viking who became the first ruler of Normandy because of...
