The Sé Cathedral, or Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady, located in the parish of the same name in Funchal, is an imposing building with a rich history dating back to the late 15th century. Its construction was initiated by King Manuel I of Portugal and the design was by the architect Pêro Anes. It was completed in 1514, but religious services have been held there since 1508, when Funchal was granted city status.
The Sé Cathedral immediately impresses with its majestic façade in the Manueline style, typical of the Portuguese Renaissance. The ornate Gothic gate with narrow archivolts invites you inside, into the cool and peaceful interior. Inside, you will be captivated by the richly decorated wooden ceilings, altars and chapels, which house treasures of sacred art. Of particular note are the silver processional cross, donated by King Manuel I, and the Museum of Sacred Art, where you can find other gems such as liturgical objects, paintings and sculptures.

In case one wants to enter while a mass is ongoing, please show respect and tiptoe to the benches on the side when accessing from the back. The architecture is amazing, the ceiling is all made of carved wood with paintings in between. The altar is an impressive golden shrine with an overwhelming amount of ornaments and paintings. On the side walls, it is unclear which saints can be seen, as there are no information panels around. At the time of writing, restoration works are ongoing right at the back entrance. The surroundings of the cathedral are also note worthy, as one can find typical town squares with impressive trees casting refreshing shadows over bars and restaurants.
