Brilliant location in central Funchal, a short walking distance from airport bus stop 6 on Avenida do Mer and close to main sights and many shops, cafes and restaurants.|Excellent value We booked directly with the hotel. Rates vary according to the time of year and whether it is a festival time. Very helpful and accommodating reception staff. They have information about local trips and can book these for you. There is a 24 hour concierge so it felt very safe.||There are 5 floors of rooms, standard and superior. We were in 502, on floor 5, a 'superior' room which had a lovely small private terrace overlooking the mountains at the back of the hotel. There is also a larger communal terrace on this floor at the front of the hotel with wonderful views of the Cathedral and surrounding area and the harbour. It was fascinating watching the cruise ships come in and out almost every day. The lift is quick and efficient.||502 is a good sized room with two single beds pushed together (see previous review), a desk, two chairs, TV with some English programmes, ample storage, plenty of coat hangars, a small fridge, safe (10 euros extra + 5 euros refundable key deposit), a good clean bathroom with bath, shower over bath and bidet, hairdryer and good magnifying mirror. Wi-Fi and air-con were good. No noticeable noise when we were there either externally or internally. NB No tea making facilities in the room.||Very good choice of food at the buffet breakfast which was included in the price. There was always a lovely variety of bread, rolls and pastries which varied from day to day and fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurt, cheese and ham as well as boiled or scrambled eggs, bacon and sausages and a variety of teas, coffees and juice. Everything was replenished constantly and very clean. The only negative as has been mentioned in previous reviews is that the restaurant area is small and it felt uncomfortably awkward. However the positives far out weigh this negative and this hotel definitely...
Read moreA small 3 stars hotel with a perfect location in the heart of Funchal center , just across the touristic harbour.|There are 5 leveles with an open terrace on the fifth floor where you can smoke , enjoy your coffee or simple watch the nice panorama in front of you .|The hotel has a modern elevator .|Our room was quite small, with old but functional furniture .Still , the double bed was narrow for 2 adults ( only 155 - 160 cms in width ) and the matress rather rigid .|Bathroom was ok , no complaint . I still suggest to the management to replace the very big body towels with much smaller ones because there is not enough space to let them dry properly .|Air conditioning was perfectly working .|Wifi signal was good .|Room cleaning was done everyday.|Hotel does not offer lunch or dinner but this is not a problem with so many restaurants around .|Breakfast is 3 stars standard but the same products are offered every day so it becomes boring soon .|But the best in the hotel was the staff : very polite, nice , kind , obliging . Thank you all !||Tips :||Take care at reservation because :|- not all rooms have balcony|- not all rooms have front ( nice ) view|- not all rooms have minifridge||Please take into consideration that the hotel is placed near The Funchal Catholic Cathedral and the big bells mark the time every hour, quarters, halves and 3 quarters of hours from 6 in the morning to 8 in the evening !||All together , we had a nice stay and could came back here...
Read moreYou could not be more central, the hotel overlooks the Cathedral. A particular feature is the original late "art deco" interior. Either you think it looks tired or you revel in it's under stated elegance. The best room are at the front and have balconies, 101 & 102 have theirs on top of the canopy over the door. They are large rooms with comfortable chairs for sitting in. The bed is also comfortable. One gripe is there are few drawers for storage, though the wardrobe is large. There is a fridge and a safe which you have to pay for (not impressed).||A particular feature is a panoramic lounge with a terrace on floor 5 giving a view over the cathedral to the sea beyond.||There was plenty of good quality food available for the included breakfast. A particular feature was the coffee machine that did excellent expressos among a number of choices, including Nescafe!.||They will arrange for a taxi for airport transfers at 30 euros one way. You can pay for this when you leave but it has to be cash. The driver is the weekday evening porter so can arrange your trip back directly with him or even any...
