Igreja de São João Evangelista do Colégio do Funchal — Attraction in Funchal

From April 2023 they are charging visitors to enter the church and tower. However, services are free to attend.

The Church of Saint John the Evangelist of the College of Funchal was constructed in the 17th century by the Society of Jesus. It was the largest structure built in Funchal until the 19th century.

In 2008 a large organ was installed in the church. The church belongs to the old Jesuit College and is presently occupied by the University of Madeira and the Catholic University.

I cannot recall a more spectacular display of colour and different mediums inside a church. On the walls there is a mixture of beautiful tiles, paintings, paintings made to look like tiles and an exquisitely painted barrel vaulted ceiling. You'd how no idea how spectacular this place is without going inside.. I was amazed. I left recommending the place to other members of our group. Epic ceiling. I'd even recommend a guide. I learned so much about this islands history of people, culture, religion, education......
