LONG WAITING TIME, TERRIBLE SERVICE, RUDE WAITRESS, RESPECTLESS MANAGER, OVERPRICED!!

At first sight the place seems like a nice café. We where almost "pushed" into the restaurant by two different waiters, and given menus at the table. Here we sat for 20 minutes before someone had the decency to look at us and come over to take our order. When we ordered we had a pleasant waiter, but he could not fully understand us, so we had to repeat the order twice to make sure it was noted correctly. Waiting time for the starters wasn't bad, but we got one starter to many. It seems like they give you bread for free, but when the bill came later, the bread was written on the bill. When we asked about this they told us that if we didn't want the bread we could've just said so. We told them that we hadn't ordered bread so they removed it from the bill. The starters was good, but not what we expected. We ordered the Shrimp Aioli and the Goat Cheese on toast, and we did not get aioli, and the cheese didn't taste like goat cheese.

When we got the main courses things started to get bad. I had ordered a fish fillet and my partner the grilled beef with bearnaise. Neither was as expected. When we got the food I looked at my "fish fillet" and wondered why it was fried. I asked about this and was told that it was just the way it was served (even though it didn't say "fried fish fillet"). After eating a little bit, my partner thought the beef was a little chewy so I had a taste. After 5 minutes I was still chewing, and at the end I just had to spit it out.

When we asked for the bill and at the same time told the waiter about our experience he said "Ok, I´m sorry, wait a moment". 15 minutes later we got the bill, and guess what? NO DISCOUNT. We talked to 5 different waiters and waitresses before we got to talk with the "manager". We once again told our story and experience with the meal, and he simply said that "It seems strange that you complain about everything" and "we cannot do anything about the discount, our machine won't accept it". I was taken aback and started to raise my voice. At the end I managed to talk down the price from €61 to €50 even though I should've just left the place without paying.

I do not recommend this to anyone. We talked to a group of people about to enter the restaurant and urged them to choose another...

I am Portuguese but I'm writing in English so everybody can read this. I was at this place on December 8 before dinner. We were two sisters and just wanted to have a crêpe with Nutella. First, the girl inside of the counter yell to the employe that was taking our order that our request looked complicated. She looked upset for having to do it. Then, we ask cream and it came just a little bit, the size of a pea, we complaint and then they to put another pea size amount on top of the other. By the end, noticing that the service was very different when the clients were foreigns we ordered the bill. She didn't even look at us while the other foreign couple had the opportunity to pay immediately because she took her time to look at them. Worst part was the final part, I asked a vat number on the bill and the girl looked at me with a discontentment face and said Omg.. OMG.. While she was going to do it, always saying that. I never had in my entire life such a bad experience with staff from a restaurant. Honestly if you are Portuguese don't go to café Funchal bar, they don't...

Such bad service it was a joke - and I can see I’m not the only one to comment on this. The table we were shown to was filthy and when the waiter brushed it down he brushed all the crumbs towards me onto my lap, took ages for anyone to come to our table to take our order, they challenged our menu choices (and not in the acceptable, considerate ‘helping out tourists’ way), were reluctant to bring us a spare plate, cutlery wasn’t placed on the table it was thrown/chucked down, when I asked for ketchup it was brought 10 minutes later and slammed onto the table whilst they were talking to someone else with their back to me, two of the staff were openly shouting/arguing in the middle of the public space, when we asked for extra drinks the lady hardly looked at as as she spoke, preferring to fiddle with stuff on our table, and when I went to the toilet the staff all looked at me like I was doing something forbidden. Food was nice enough - would have given overall rating of 4 if the staff had been friendlier /...

In my opinion the worst restaurant we were in Madeira. To start with, before we entered the restaurant I asked if they have Lapas because I was wondering how they taste. The waiter at the entrance told me that there is no Lapas season only to lure us in (later we found out Lapas can be found). The energy in this restaurant is dead. The waiters receive evil eyes from the elder ladies and its obvious that they really do not like their job. Further we ordered the lobster cocktail (one of the pricier dishes on the menu) and it was nothing good. The sauce tastet like it was poured from a bottle. After we finished the lobster (we used fork and knife to eat it) the waitress was mad that we used the cutlery instead of the spoon and said that the lobster cocktail should be eaten with a spoon. The fish was okay but not more than that. The best thing was the garlic bread. Really bad experience unfortunately...

It was so bad, a week later we are still laughing about it. Imagine ordering pancake TOWER (you’d think nothing can go wrong) and then getting a plate with two defrosted pancakes with frozen red fruit on top that was shoved into the microwave - resulting in a disgusting plate of tasteless fruit juice and soggy pancakes. Yes, that’s what you get here! See the picture. When we asked one of the waiters very friendly of they could maybe remove the fruit soup on the plate, they looked at us extremely mad, walked away and came back to smack an empty plate on our table. The bread they used for the bacon&egg sandwich was at least 3 days old. All in all, it was a disaster. But: if you want to have a good laugh about your food, this is the place to be!

Functional bar in an area that's full of atmosphere. Came here for a pre dinner drink to soak up the atmosphere. Sadly it had rained recently so we missed out on said atmosphere, though we've walked past it plenty of times. It wasn't busy but we were shown to a table where the rain water was dripping on the table and we were just on the edge of the roof cover. Decor of the bar area is nice, beers are refreshing. Staff are prompt. It's got a great position on the street. Giving benefit of the doubt here given they were prepping for dinner but could have been a little more considerate in seating location.
