Das Igreja e Mosteiro de Santa Clara in Vila do Conde ist wie ein mächtiger, stiller Wächter aus Stein, der über die Stadt und ihre Geschichte wacht.

Der erste Blick auf die Außenfassade – eine Mischung aus Gotik und manuelinischen Elementen – ist beeindruckend. Dicke Mauern und zierliche Spitzbögen rahmen die Fassade ein, während uns der hohe Glockenturm fast wie ein Fingerzeig erscheint, der gen Himmel weist. In den grauen Granit, der im portugiesischen Licht beinahe silbern wirkt, sind feine Reliefs und Verzierungen eingearbeitet, die das Auge förmlich einladen, an den Details hängen zu bleiben.

Als wir die Kirche betreten, umfängt uns eine kühle Stille. Die hohen Gewölbe über uns, die spitz zulaufenden Bögen und die prächtigen, mit Gold überzogenen Holzaltäre verleihen dem Raum eine geradezu überirdische Wirkung. Wir stehen da, fast ehrfürchtig, und lassen den Blick über die bemalten Decken und die kunstvoll geschnitzten Altäre schweifen. Die Schnitzereien des Hauptaltars erzählen von Szenen aus dem Leben Christi, und jeder Winkel des Raums ist erfüllt von feiner Handarbeit und spiritueller Hingabe. Es ist schwer, sich nicht verloren zu fühlen in der Weite dieser gotischen Schönheit.

Auf unserem Rundgang gelangen wir zum Kreuzgang des Klosters, einem Innenhof, um den sich eine Galerie von zierlichen Säulen zieht. Die Spitzbögen werfen filigrane Schatten auf die Bodenfliesen, die mit den typischen portugiesischen azulejos, den blauen Fliesen, verziert sind. Die Muster und Motive, die hier abgebildet sind, erzählen von biblischen Geschichten und religiösen Symbolen, und es ist leicht, sich vorzustellen, wie die Nonnen hier ihre Tage in Gebet und Meditation verbracht haben.

Im Jahr 1318 gegründet, ist das Kloster eines der ältesten und bedeutendsten Klarissenklöster Portugals. Gegründet von Dona Mécia Gonçalves, einer Adligen mit einer tiefen spirituellen Hingabe, sollte es als Heim für die Klarissen-Nonnen dienen. Im 17. Jahrhundert, als Vila do Conde durch die Entdeckungen und den Schiffsbau wohlhabend wurde, profitierte auch das Kloster davon. Ein besonders beeindruckendes Bauprojekt jener Zeit war das Aqueduto de Santa Clara, ein riesiges Aquädukt, das extra zur Wasserversorgung des Klosters errichtet wurde und bis heute über weite Teile der Region zu sehen ist.

Das Kloster war über Jahrhunderte ein spirituelles Zentrum und zugleich ein Symbol für den Einfluss des Adels in der Region. Mit dem Aufstieg und Fall des Klosters gingen auch die Höhen und Tiefen der Stadt Vila do Conde einher. In Zeiten wirtschaftlicher Blüte konnten die Nonnen nicht nur ihr religiöses Leben führen, sondern auch eine bedeutende landwirtschaftliche und wirtschaftliche Tätigkeit entfalten. Doch im 19. Jahrhundert, als Portugal von politischen und sozialen Umwälzungen erschüttert wurde, kam es auch zur Säkularisation, und das Kloster verlor Teile seiner Bedeutung und seines Einflusses.

Beim Hinausgehen aus der Kirche blicken wir noch einmal zurück, und es fällt uns schwer, diesen Ort der Stille und des spirituellen Erbes zu verlassen. Das Igreja e Mosteiro de Santa Clara hat etwas Zeitloses an sich. Uns wird bewusst, wie tief diese Mauern im Glauben und im Leben der Stadt Vila do Conde verwurzelt sind und wie bedeutend dieser Ort für die Menschen über Jahrhunderte war – und vielleicht noch immer ist.

Mit müden Schritten und beeindruckten Herzen verlassen wir das Kloster, das nun hinter uns liegt, aber in Gedanken uns sicher noch ein Stück auf dem Pilgerweg begleiten wird.

O Convento de Santa Clara localiza-se na cidade de Vila do Conde, distrito do Porto, em Portugal. Foi um convento feminino instituído em 1318 e extinto no século XIX. Do antigo conjunto, restam-nos a magnífica igreja em estilo gótico e parte do edifício conventual, reedificada parcialmente no século XVIII. O convento foi fundado por iniciativa de D.Afonso Sanches filho bastardo de Dinis I de Portugal, e de sua esposa, D. Teresa Martins. Do património edificado ao longo dos séculos, restam-nos hoje a igreja (ver: Igreja do Convento de Santa Clara), em estilo gótico, a área residencial (outrora designada como os "dormitórios novos"), edificada no século XVIII, os arcos do antigo claustro com o seu chafariz e o extenso aqueduto - o aqueduto de Santa Clara, em parte destruído. Na igreja encontram-se alguns importantes túmulos: o de Beatriz de Portugal, filha do beato Nuno Álvares Pereira, o dos Condes de Cantanhede e os dos fundadores. Um dos momentos mais notáveis da história do convento ocorreu sob a abadessa D. Isabel de Castro (1518-1543). A reedificação de 1777 em gosto neopalladino é do mestre pedreiro Henrique Ventura Lobo, que trabalhou na Cadeia do Tribunal da Relação do Porto. A lenda da Abadessa Berengária e a lenda da Menina do Merendeiro - originárias do convento - testemunham, da parte das monjas da casa, anseios duma vivência cristã muito depurada. Após o decreto de extinção das ordens religiosas (1834), a vida no convento foi-se apagando lentamente, até chegar ao seu termo em 1892, com a morte da última freira. Em 1902 as dependências do antigo convento receberam a Casa de Detenção e Correcção do Porto, depois Reformatório de Vila do Conde e Escola Profissional de Santa Clara, sendo depois conhecido como Centro Educativo de Santa Clara, estabelecimento de tutela de menores que funcionou até 2007. Após 2007 ficou abandonado. Em setembro de 2008 foi assinado um contrato entre o Turismo de Portugal e o Grupo Pestana com vista à sua transformação em Pousada de Portugal, projecto qual não foi realizado. Em 2015 após acordo com a câmara de Vila do Conde, o mosteiro sofreu intervenções de reabilitação com o objectivo de albergar os serviços municipalizados de Vila do Conde. O convento foi reabilitado no que se refere a coberturas, fachadas, elementos pétreos e caixilharias de madeira pintada. Em 2018, o governo através do programa Revive, concessionou ao uso turístico o imóvel com o modelo jurídico de direito de superfície por um período de 50 anos. The church and the monastery are closed to the public, they are building a five star hotel or something like that. It's a pity since the church from outside is stunning and so is the aqueduct. Nice view of the city, worth coming even if the church it's not visitable.
