The three-star rating is due to the lack of acknowledgement of the pillage done to colonized countries. There were only boastful comments that showed one side of history rather than understand the harm that was done. In many other museums I've been to, panels on history are more objective, while this Porto museum sadly lack awareness.

€20 for a single visit is only slightly worth it if you don't mind reading many panels of text about the history. It's not for casual museum goers but can be enlightening and fun if you like to read. There is only a few interactive aspects and even fewer artifacts, making this a poor spot for children to learn. Despite the pricey ticket, I still enjoyed the tour, especially the documentary and some of the more colourful and dramatic personal history in the reigning families. It was only at the section on the history of The Age of Discovery that I was dismayed at the museum's lack of reflection, otherwise it was a good...

What an amazing museum!

This museum far exceeds expectations and is one of the best laid out, designed (the sets, movies and models are all fantastic.) museums I’ve ever been to. Though it’s not huge, there’s so much well presented information here that you could easily spend a couple of hours digesting it all.

Though it’s fine to bring the kids along, I wouldn’t recommend it for children as there’s a lot of reading and it seems more geared towards adults.

At the end is a gift shop that also happens to be one of the more high quality, tasteful shops I’d visited in Porto.

This museum great place to start to give yourself an overview of the city’s history before exploring. It’s also part of the Culture district, a modern complex of museums, restaurants and port lodges, that’s so thoughtfully designed, you could spend a half day or return and do more.

All in all this area (including the museum) was one of the...

As an individual museum, this is expensive by any standards, but especially in Portuguese terms (€20). As part of one of the World of Wine (WOW) ticket packages, it becomes more affordable, and it is an excellent place for anyone interested in the history of Porto and how that fits into wider Portuguese history to spend a couple of hours. It is informative and uses a variety of media to tell the story, although some may find the section on the Middle Ages a little hard going (it is nearly all reading text, which I like but isn’t everyone’s preferred style). There are plenty of videos and audiovisual displays about some of the key moments in Porto’s history, and a few interactive displays to learn more. Probably too costly for anyone to visit casually, but worth it for anyone with a moderate amount of interest in a rich and...

This was a disappointing experience. The beginning contains a lot of panels to read to know what happened between 8th century and 18th century. So for those who are not keen on reading for long, you will miss out a lot on the history. The movie about the Napolean wars was excellent and I wished there had been more activities like this. They created a lot of decors but it doesn't always help comprehension. Most disappointing thing : the lack of critical spirit regarding the colonisation in Africa etc. Not considering at all the impact on the population who suffered it but with an emphasis on how it helped Portugal become more grand and rich. We're in 2022 guys !
