The Peter and Paul Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox cathedral located inside the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg, Russia. It is the first and oldest landmark in St. Petersburg, built between 1712 and 1733 on Hare Island along the Neva River. Both the cathedral and the fortress were originally built under Peter the Great and designed by Domenico Trezzini. The cathedral's bell tower is the world's tallest Orthodox bell tower. Since the belfry is not standalone, but an integral part of the main building, the cathedral is sometimes considered the highest Orthodox Church in the world. THIS IS NOT the Peter and Paul's Cathedral where the Romanov's are buried (that one is in St. Pet center within the same name fortress on an island). THIS IS the same name Cathedral in Peterhof, around 45 min from the center. It totally differs in style and year of construction from the St. Pet's one. This one in Peterhof is just across the road from the Peterhof summer Palace complex (read that review). Обычно в Петергоф езжу с туристами, тк сама не очень люблю большие скопления народу, а в парке летом просто ад:) Так вот, этот собор всегда проезжала мимо, хотя очень он красивый и запоминающийся!! Тут от кого-то услышала, что там есть возможность подняться наверх и посмотреть на город сверху, это и стало поводом в один из выходных поехать целенаправленно туда!! Сейчас собор частично в лесах, но это не очень помещало просмотру. Сначала решили, как раз подняться на, так называемую, смотровую. Вход туда 100 руб., как пожертвование, не совсем поняла, но заплатили и пошли. Подниматься высоко, лестница узкая, но вполне комфортная, хотя на самом верху пришлось отдышаться:) Смотровая застеклена, не как на Исаакиевском соборе. Здесь также двигаетесь по кругу, параллельно смотреть можно и в окно, и изучать стенды с информацией о соборе и его сложной истории, лично я почерпнула для себя очень много. Вид из окон красивый, окна, кстати, чистые;) В нескольких местах есть отдельные помещения, как бы площадки, тоже, конечно, застекленные!! После смотровой зашли непосредственно в сам собор.
