One of the things that moved me the most during my trip was seeing how Serbia preserves certain buildings that were bombed during the Kosovo War in 1999, when NATO launched airstrikes on Belgrade and other parts of the country.

One of the most striking sites was the former headquarters of Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), which was hit by a NATO missile on the night of April 23, 1999, during Operation Allied Force. Sixteen RTS employees were killed in the attack — most of them technicians, security workers, and makeup artists. Many were trapped in the rubble and managed to communicate only through mobile phones. Despite the tragedy, the station resumed broadcasting in less than 24 hours from a secret location.

Looking at what remains of the building, it’s impossible not to think about those who were inside, working. Did they fear something like this might happen? Did they sense the danger? These questions arise and lead to a deep reflection on the fragility of life during wartime.

Today, the damaged building still stands as a cultural monument. Serbia’s decision to preserve it in this state — without hiding or restoring the scars — is a powerful act of memory and respect. Nearby, other bombed buildings have also been preserved, integrated into the urban landscape and national history. The Russian Orthodox Church next to the RTS headquarters was also seriously damaged during the attacks.

It’s a sobering visit, but an important one. It reminds us of the human cost of war — and of the importance of...

Very sad and interesting, i love how they kept this, its a unique and tragic monument. However its kind of hidden and i think it could get some more english signs next to it or any boards of information near it. It literally has a parking lot infront of it. So i believe they should give it more focus and attention and also make it more tourist friendly as it is a greatly...
