Now This is the Temple and He is the main protagonist from whom and where everything started in GOKARNA...the famous Temple -Town of Karnataka. Infact, Gokarna is all about religious legends...the very birth of this sacred place itself, is a legend...one with associated with Ravana, the mighty King of Lanka and the most notable Shiva disciple and Ganapati, the son of Shiva. When Ravan was carrying the Atmalingam( the Soul of the Almighty/ Shiva) to Lanka, after getting it from Shiva Himself, he was deceived by Ganapati who was dressed as a small boy and asked to help by Ravan to hold the sacred Atmalingam...but Ganapati just put Him at Gokarna, the place now famous as Mahabaleshwar and thus stopped Ravan from taking the Atmalingam to Lanka. Thus it is Ganapati...and Ganapati alone who stop Ravan, saved mankind and the main reason behind GOKARNA 's birth. Now, the Maha Ganapati Temple is the main temple....after paying your homage to Ganapati you should visit Mahabaleshwar. The temple is a beautiful and divine one, just a few meters from Mahabaleshwar Temple... and once inside you will surely feel a divine aura. And the Ganapati Idol is something different...a hole in His head ...the story of Ravan's angry outburst who threw a stone at Ganapati's head after His failure to pull out the Atmalingam from the soil... Just visit the place.

This temple deity Maha Ganapati is the real beauty and has got the history and Purana story. Ravana brought Shivlinga from Lord shiva to establish in Srilanka (SL) . Lord shiva imposed a condition not to put it anywhere in the land till he reached SL. In the meantime, lord Indira with a fear not to establish in SL by Ravana who gets more power and to trouble Devas, approached Narada to stop Ravana taking the same to SL. In turn, Naradha approached Lord Vinayaga to stop Ravana's activities .In the en-route, Ravana performs his routine Sandyavandhana, he handed over the linga with a request to keep for a while to a small kid till he finished his daily rituals. Lord Vinayaga in the form of a small kid kept in his hand for some time; Ravana had a holy dip in the kodi theertha and enjoyed and forgot the mantra for a while. In turn the small kid Vinayaga put the linga on the floor. Ravana immediately after bath called the kid to get back the Linga and found that the Linga established already. Ravana with his anger he stings on the head of the baby. Immediately, the baby in the form of Vinayaga showed his pose to Ravan in the place where Mahabaleshwar temple is situated at Gokarna and Vinayagar temple is adjacent. Today is a week day no rush at all. We can touch the lord Vinayaga and worship. Only dhoti and towel to wear .
