Shark Warrior Adventure Centre — Attraction in Cape Town Ward 61

DO NOT book with Terry for “paddle with the penguins” Airbnb experience. He didn’t show up to our appointment and he was rude and arrogant when we called him on the phone to remind him of his booking. Update: he just commented saying it was “canceled for safety” but he didn’t cancel it on Airbnb until THREE HOURS after we had arrived at his shop for the start of the trip, and after we had called him to ask him where he was. See photos to see that he canceled at 12pm when our appointment was supposed to have been 9am on April 25. A good business would apologize and learn from their mistakes to try to do better, not lie to cover their tracks. See the other low reviews, we’re not alone in this experience.

Details: We made our booking a week before we arrived for April 25, and messaged him on April 16 to confirm we could get a tandem kayak. He responded and said yes. We drove 1 hour to the Shark Warrior Adventure Center in Simon’s Town and he never showed up. He didn’t respond on Airbnb initially. We called him and he claimed he didn’t know we made the booking, even though we had messaged him about it prior. He appeared to shirk responsibility because he claimed we should know that the weather isn’t suitable for kayaking. This is a ridiculous claim because we are tourists who come from halfway across the world and that’s why we had booked him as a guide - for his supposed expertise about the weather. If HE thought the weather isn’t suitable, HE should have communicated it and canceled in advance of us driving 1 hour to his shop. It’s 63 degrees Fahrenheit, the waves look calm in Simon’s Town, and we saw other people kayaking nearby at the time of our appointment, so how were we to know? He hasn’t even fully apologized for his mistake, he just keeps making excuses on Airbnb. We noticed he’s received other reviews like this on Airbnb and TripAdvisor, so it seems to be a pattern with Terry or the Shark Warrior Adventure Centre. If you booked with them, you should call them a day in advance to confirm they won’t skip your appointment. Their REAL phone number is on their website, it’s not the number listed on Airbnb or on their shop door in Simon’s Town.

Terry not only wasted our time (and money, still waiting on a refund) but he also treated us terribly. Overall, we would never recommend his business to anyone. We visited Shark Warrior Adventures with the Escape+Explore tour group and Hills of Africa Travel in November 2019 and it was an amazing and eye opening experience! The Boulders Bay area is quite lovely and picturesque. We were not able to go kayaking that day because the winds were wicked but our tour guides gave us a ton of great knowledge and information about the wildlife, the surrounding area and also their conservation efforts, which I was most impressed with overall. What an incredible experience! 🐧🛶 Our kayaking tour with the penguins was truly unforgettable. Gliding through the clear waters alongside these adorable creatures was magical in itself but what made it even more special was our guide, Terry. He was so knowledgeable, kind, and passionate, and we learned so much from him about the local wildlife and environment.
