As part of my holiday to South Africa, I had chosen SimonsTown as a must go place due to its location as a hub to explore the southern part of Cape Town. Having explored many types of accommodation, I came across the Mariner Guesthouse. After reading the very good reviews online and seeing the owners and guest photos, I booked a two nights stay at a very reasonable price, including breakfast. After a short car journey from the airport, following the directions from the guesthouse, i arrived and parked in one of the plentiful free parking spaces at the guesthouse. I was pleasantly greeted by the very friendly manager. She gave me a guided tour of the guesthouse and passed on so much information about the area, including great places to eat and places to visit. I had chosen a superior double room, which was beautifully presented with a very comfortable 4 poster double bed with a good firm mattress, own modern, clean bathroom with shower, microwave, fridge, tea, and coffee making facilities. It had a balcony with incredible views of SimonsTown and False Bay. Being an early bird, I was fortunate enough to see the beautiful sunrise every morning on my stay before breakfast. Breakfast was served from 7am in the dining area also with great views out over SimonsTown and the Bay, which catered for all. A great choice of cooked options served up to your liking by the very friendly staff is available as well as fruits, cereals, drinks like tea, coffees and juices to name a few. Next to the dining area is the lounge with very comfortable seating, fantastic views, and an open fireplace and telescope, again beautifully presented. During my stay here, I had chosen to go on an early morning shark tour excursion and had to leave before breakfast, the staff very kindly offered and prepared me breakfast the night before to which I stored in the fridge in my room so I had something to eat before I left. During my stay, I visited many parts of SimonsTown on recommendation from the manager, including Boulders beach, to see the penguins, the Cape of Good Hope, and a few museums in SimonsTown to name a few. I'm very glad I took the advice, as personally I was very pleased to visit these places as some id not been aware of before I had arrived. SimonsTown mariner and the main road with many shops, cafes, and restaurants are also within walking distance for the fit and able as the guesthouse is situated slightly elevated from the seafront there are quite a few steps to negotiate. There is also plenty of parking available for just a 5 minute car ride if you wish. Overall, I had a fantastic stay here at the Mariner Guesthouse, which made all the better by the most friendly staff here. They helped make my holiday one I'll never forget, and when I visit South Africa again in the future, I wouldn't hesitate to check availability here straight...
Read moreAvoid if only because the owner is terrible. We booked a few days in advance and chose this guest house among hundreds because it said it had AC on the booking website. Hotels.com listed it as a filtered amenity they had in room and said it on the guest houses website. It's January here. It's scorching hot. And we need AC to be comfortable at night. We show up, my bf checks in. We bring our bags in and realize, no AC! He goes back and is told only some rooms have AC, not all, and there are no AC rooms available. They offer us the owners daughters room which does have AC but is covered in personal belongings and is basically a small kids room. We say ok well if you have no rooms with AC we will just have to get a different hotel, figuring we're being pretty nice considering.l we have to move our stuff out and get a new place last minute. My bf asks about our refund since we can't stay. The receptionist calls the owner and the owner gets on the phone with my bf and says that we can't have a refund because even though hotels.com said the rooms have AC, the email that was sent after we paid for the hotel room stated somewhere in the terms and conditions that our room wasn't an AC room. We checked the email and can't find this information, and regardless it wouldn't matter. You can't charge someone for an amenity and then tell them after they've paid that they don't actually offer it. So in addition to have to lug our bags around multiple times and buy a room last minute in a less than safe town, the owner not only doesn't apologize but says they're keeping our money. I should note that in the five minutes we were there we could hear EVERYTHING the guys in the next room said and there was a dog barking nonstop. If you're enthralled with the view of this guest house rest assured that every hotel in this town has a similar view, it's a hillside town. There's hundreds of identical guest houses. I've ran an Airbnb and would never be this rude to a guest about what is at best a misunderstanding and at worst an error on their part. So within ten minutes we issued a charge back for fraud on our credit card, our monies already refunded, and this guest house gets a bad review and a strict against them for Visa charges. Guess that is what...
