Simon's Town Museum is an fascinating step into South African history, especially various aspects of the British Empire. From being a prison, naval commanders home, court house, storage depot to having an even darker past, the museum showcases the storied past of the area. Be sure and check out the cells and tunnels under the museum...you might have to ask to see them. The museum highlights all these periods in it's history as well contemporary history, both the good and the bad. The curator and staff are extremely knowledgeable and courteous and more then helpful with information on the area. The museum looks out over the crystal clear bay and the Simon's Town naval base. Next door is the South African Naval museum, which is certainly worth the stop. From the museum you can also see the South African Naval Museum Submarine Assegaai, the boat ride to it and tour are excellent. Enjoy the experience.
