You are officially the worst fish n chips place in Cape Town. Cleanliness 0/10.. service 0/10… food DISGUSTING.. 0/10. When we arrived I specifically asked the lady behind the counter if I should order at the counter or if she will take our order at the table. She said we should sit down. Then a waiter came and said it’s self service and we should order at the counter. We had a couple sitting next to us with their dogs under the table. They were given preferential treatment. We had two kids with us, a 2 yr old and a 5 yr old. The food arrived in take away containers and we started opening the containers to eat and suddenly a staff member rushed to say we should stop as this is not our order after we opened the container and touched the food. She then gave the food to another customer. Sadly they were unaware that we opened the food. When our order arrived the fish was horrible and dry, the batter was hard. Looked like old fish. We eat fish n chips at many establishments and this was by far the worst and the most expensive. The quality and service at Salty Seadog has seriously deteriorated. We all ate a bit and have the rest of the food away. Never ever will I eat here again. If I compare Fish on The Rocks, Lucky Fish, Kalkys to name a few I would rate them between a 7 and 10, but Salty Seadog a big fat Zero! The last picture makes no sense 🤣🤣🤣 To top it all the staff in the kitchen don’t wear any head nets. Unacceptable - Yuk! Can the owner and manager please explain how did we get served in take away containers when other reviews clearly show proper crockery. We also given a plastic fork each and no knife until we asked and suddenly the cutlery arrived. Why? It seems like when the cat is away the mice are...

My husband and I visited The Salty Sea Dog 30/01/2020. The lady behind the till had a serious attitude. Not friendly at all. She got terribly annoyed when I asked to see the container size as we did not know what their 'normal size' (as she put it) was. After reluctantly showing us the styrofoam container, she 'passed us off' to another lady for us to pay. Also, the floor was extremely oily and slippery. We ordered grilled hake (somewhere around R72 - for 2 pieces), and a portion of 150 g squid with chips (R90 odd rand). We got our order, but unfortunately for us almost everything was burnt. We did not check it in store as we did not expect that. Especially since they have many good reviews. The hake was slightly burnt and the inside flesh was a bit yellow closer to the silver skin (it was not the spices etc.) - however, it did look appetizing. The chips were soaked with oil and some tasted a bit raw. The worst part was the squid. All the squid were burnt and drenched in oil. Completely burnt. Those parts that look like mini octopus were black. Made everything taste charred. We ended up not eating more than half of that. However, the few dishes we saw going out to customers sitting inside the restaurant looked very nice. So not sure whether they just rushed our order or what, but very disappointing. I do not...

On approach we were told to go into a side door as my Mum-in-law 90 is in a wheelchair & it couldn't fit through the front entrance. No mention of not wheelchair friendly. We got to the side entrance to find steps & nobody to help us get the wheelchair up. I'm in my 60's on crutches, my mother 86 & walks with a walking stick. But the waiter stood there with menus waiting to seat us. Customers got up to help us get the wheelchair in.

Food was good when we finally got it served after waiting almost an hour. Our drinks Hot chocolate & a black coffee. I was already long finished with my hot chocolate & my mom was still waiting for her cup of espresso. How long does it take to make a miniature cup of black coffee. Twice ordered & my hot chocolate was delivered both times pretty quickly but my Mom had to wait forever for her black coffee.

Never again. Service was pathetic & really overpriced. A piece of Hake & chips R100. If the service was better I might not have minded...

Don’t be scared away by the prices. It is not because of the wonderful setting, it is because not only are the portions absolutely massive, the quality is by far the best I have experienced at any “fish and chip” shop in the Western Cape- no jokes. We had a Snoek + chips and a Hake plus slaw on the side. I reckon that fish was swimming in the ocean just before we ordered it- so fresh. Chips were the hand cut real potato style and the slaw was not swimming in sauce. The service by “Smiley” as we called him (I think his name badge said Nkosi (or similar), was professional, efficient and friendly. The glasses and cutlery were spotless. The drinks were ice cold. The bill came to R400 (including 2 draught beers) before tip and we have enough leftovers for dinner as well. Restaurant was clean, staff were friendly. We felt a lot more welcome here than we did walking past some of the other shops in the harbour. Highly recommended.

I’d definitely recommend giving The Salty Sea Dog a try. We had the hake & chips, snoek & chips and a chicken burger. The chips were perfect, nice and soft on the inside, a little crispy on the outside. The snoek was absolutely delicious, and I’d especially recommend trying it if you haven’t before. The hakes were a bit oily but fresh and good nonetheless, and the batter to fish ratio was perfect! The chicken burger was underwhelming, the chicken patty tasted like it was one of those cheap freezer patties but then again this is a seafood restaurant. Our food arrived very quickly even though it was busy. And the servers are friendly as well. It has a pretty good atmosphere, very laid back and family friendly.
