Exquisite interior that bursts at the seems with quiet elegance, beautiful designs reminiscent of Old English Manors and history that speaks of an era well preserved, but well worth honouringđŸŒč The woodwork is to admired, revered and enjoyed, whilst the decor demands that you take a breathe, still your Spirit and just "Be"....relax and allow yourself to be servedđŸ”„ The building and architecture, was simply phenomenal for me and stood out majestically against the new shiny glass enhanced buildings...declaring itself an Old Dame or Matriarch that dared to be questioned 😊 The feeling of riding in the oldest elevator in South Africa, was surreal. What a welcome party in the time-honored Rand Club with its fine British colonial charm. I came there with Hawaiian shirt and shorts - a fashion sacrilege that was initially punished with withering looks. But our irresistible charm opened the doors of this venerable establishment, which was once co-founded by the controversial figure Cecil Rhodes. The bar is an impressive 31.4 meters long - an architectural accolade for anyone who wants to get drunk after a long day at work. And the "holy halls" in which The Man with the Golden Gun was filmed? If they even exist (😉), then only for the chosen few - or for charming philistines in Hawaiian looks. Thank you very much for that! And...The burger was, surprisingly, the best so far in South Africa – in Berlin it would be average, but here it was a culinary accolade. Conclusion: wonderfully decadent, absurdly elitist – a must for every daring rascal

The Rand Club is one of Johannesburg's great landmarks. It has a rich and controversial history and remains a major attraction for the public on occasions when access is arranged. Kathy Munro, Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Architecture and Planning at Wits, visited the Club recently exploring every nook and cranny and pondering the future of this iconic institution. The Club has been reinventing itself for a number of years but tough decisions lie ahead... Johannesburg’s Rand Club is an historic city institution that survives on the original site where the first gentlemen’s club was built. It was regarded as an essential institution in the new mining town and following in the style of the Kimberley Club.

My husband and I recently booked and prepaid for a 5 night stay at The Rand Club Johannesburg as Reciprocal Members. Having stayed at several reciprocal clubs worldwide, we did not anticipate needing to check reviews due to consistently high standards of Reciprocal Clubs. However, upon our arrival after sunset, we were immediately concerned by the unsafe policed neighbourhood with dim or no lighting on surrounding streets. Admittedly, this oversight was our own, as we did not research the area beforehand so it is no fault of the Rand Club that the neighbourhood is not the best. That said, the property itself is architecturally stunning!||||To make matters worse for us, our check-in experience was just atrocious. Despite advising them in advance that we would arrive around 6:00pm, there was no help-desk or reception desk, with absolutely no one to assist us; a security guard escorted us to our room and handed us the key. We booked the Superior Suite, which promised amenities such as a HD TV with NETFLIX, luxury linen, bespoke toiletries and more. Unfortunately, the room did not meet even basic expectations. There was NO telephone in the room despite a directory of service numbers, the bed linen had large holes, there was NO Air-Conditioning which made the room uncomfortably warm and resulted in a very restless night after a 10 hour flight and the TV was not working as advertised. The once white towels were dis-coloured, stiff and abrasive!||||Further compounding our dissatisfaction, we were advised by the guard to stay on the premises for dinner due to safety concerns in the area; so we went down to the inhouse restaurant for a meal. After dinner, the elevator was stuck on an upper floor because someone had not shut the gate and again we had to find the security guard outside to assist us.||||The next morning, after learning from a few reliable sources that the neighborhood was unsafe beyond one block from the club, we decided to move to a property in a nicer neighbourhood which would offer at least the basics like air-conditioning, a working television, a telephone, decent bed-linen & towels and someplace nice enough for us to be able to step out of the property and go for a walk or a meal. Not an unreasonable expectation and certainly not too much to ask in consideration that we paid 5 star rates for 5 nights in their Superior Suite (the best accommodation the Club had to offer). ||||We made our decision to relocate after just one night and informed The Rand Club of our early departure. We booked a place at Melrose Arch and paid no more than what we paid at the Rand Club. Although we did not request a refund for the 4 unused nights, the lack of courtesy and understanding of our dissatisfaction, particularly considering the absence of basic amenities was disappointing. An “offer of a partial refund” would have been a nice gesture rather than contacting us after 6 days saying we had their room key and they would like to have it back!! Unbelievable but true! Not asking for a refund here
just stating an obvious courtesy of a so called 5 star property!!||||Abigail and her colleague (sorry I did not get her name); whom we met after brekkie were absolutely lovely
they even understood our predicament.||||On the contrary, the Management seemed unconcerned about our feedback and sniggered at our decision to relocate saying it’s a misconception of the neighbourhood and if we thought Melrose Arch or Rosebank was nicer or safer, we would be in for a surprise. The General Manager who was on his way out when we had this brief talk, walked away (which is understandable as he was on his way out) saying he was in a hurry and going to a meeting

let alone any mention of personally showing us around the Clubhouse which he had communicated with us leading up to our trip to Johannesburg!||||Long story short, I would most certainly not recommend staying at The Rand Club to other Reciprocal Members. Truly disappointing to say the least, given the exceptionally high standards of other Recipocal Clubs. PLEASE do your research if you...
