Amazing Hotel. The rooms are large and my room have 2 beds. There is a mini-kitchen in the room, with refrigerator and microwave. You have access to 24hours internet and electricity. There is hotel bus that takes you for free to anyplace that is within the radius of 5 km from the hotel. The receptionists are amazing and relate so well to visitors. Great expereince. Well, the directions in the hotel is almost like a maze. Over the next days, you will have to familiarize yourself with the directions so as not to get lost a number of times (like I did the first day). Have an exciting time at Mapungubwe Hotel.

What a bad experience I had. I arrived to find that they are still busy cleaning my room. I asked for an iron and iron board at reception but had to phone again before they brought it to my room. Empty dispensers, skew and loose toilet seat, soap holder, kitchen tap. Coffee make with no coffee pods. Dirty stains on carpet in passage. Broken lock on front door. Room service arrived and the gentlemen asked me to pour out some tomato sauce in a plate as he needs to take the bottle back. I cannot understand how this can be a 4 star. 1 Star? Maybe.

I've stayed with Mapungubwe over nine months and just can't get use to the awkward positions of some of the toilet paper holders. They are strategically situated as if they were intended for advanced level gymnastics stretching exercises. If you knock them accidentally they come down crashing as they are not held securely. Another thing is the really silly soap holders that do not hold the soap placed in the rooms. They keep on slipping through the large gaps. I hope management addresses these when they do their next round of renovations.

We booked the penthouse apartment- Rhino Room for a very reasonable price. Beautiful spacious and airy apartment with a lovely seating area, open plan kitchen, two toilets, big bathroom with a shower as well. Lots of light and views facing north as well as great sunsets. Really happy with this and cleaned every day but the balcony wasn't and there was a pigeon problem which by the end of our week's stay, meant the balcony was very dirty. Have to say we didn't report it at the time and should have done. ||We cooked some nights but you have to ask for the utensils you want as the apartment does not come kitted out which we found a bit strange. Bring your own washing up liquid and tea towel as not provided.||||The hotel also has the Marshall restaurant. VERY reasonable prices for drinks and food. We ate here three times at night and the food was excellent- best steaks we have ever had. Had breakfast here too ( included in our price) and this was also good- good variety buffet or if the hotel is quiet, we could choose from the menu. Looked forward to meal times. The bar and restaurant staff were excellent too- very friendly and helpful and they really made our stay memorable. ||||We used the shuttle only once. As mentioned in another review, we booked the shuttle to Constitution Hill both ways ( times written in the book at reception) but the shuttle was an hour late coming back and only came after we had to get the museum ticket office to call the hotel. We were told by hotel reception to get an Uber- we had no internet... We were told the shuttle therefore would come after doing an airport pickup- but the museum was closing and we felt very stressed about safety, this being our first day in town. We did get home safely but needless to say, we didn't use the shuttle again. The hop on/off red bus is actually very good and there is a stop about an 8 minute walk away.||||In terms of safety, we were prepared and hotel staff made it very clear about being careful- especially at weekends when the business district is quiet. We walked around the mining quarter ( one block away) and to the Carlton Tower during the weekdays when busy with people. There is also a Woolworths for food on Main St about a 10 minute walk away which was fine at busy times in the day to get to. Didn't go out at night on our own as advised not to. ||||Overall, really enjoyed our stay at this hotel despite the shuttle fiasco and we liked the area despite the restrictions on being able to walk...

I can confidently say this is one of the few good hotels in the inner-city of Johannesburg. Very spacious and clean self contained studio apartments.... Kettle, microwave, fridge, toaster and of course, a cooker. Location is great, walking distance to the shopping centre (Carlton Centre) and nearby coffee shops around Gandhi Square. The hotel's own restaurant, The Marshal, serves great food at reasonable prices. When I arrived, the fridge in my room was not working. When I reported it, the maintenance team were knocking at the door. There is a gym.... Although it would hardly fit 10 people at a time, I was always by myself anyway. I think because of space, they cannot fit most equipment, even if they wanted to. So there is a treadmill, exercise benches, leg curl, barbells, and a few more. But, anyway, I appreciated that it is there. Maybe a rowing machine and elliptical could be added in future? The staff were great. All of them derserve a standing ovation. From the security, ladies at the reception, waiters +waitress, to the maintainance guys. I only used the shuttle for drop offs and never for pick-ups because of some of the reviews I had read- that it's often not on time for pick-up. So the drop-off experience was great. Whether you are travelling on holiday, business or urgently need somewhere to sleep for the night, I recommend this hotel without any...
