Well when we initially booked this hotel ot was just for a couple of nights due to some discouraging reviews on Google we just did as we needed to be close to a few places around here and really for convenience sake but once we were in this place everything changed for us lol the friendly welcome from almost everyone except just one or two which you find in most places anyway was just so amazing we then decided to stay a bit longer. We had a room facing the back were there wasn't much to see so for the rest of the stay we then asked for the City view room and therefore upgraded to a much bigger room with a Queen bed unlike the twin room we initially had. The views were spectacular at all times and because we were much higher we hardly heard any noise so was very peaceful. We loved the breakfast although the plate warmer wasn't working at the time. The staff didn't mind keeping our food warm for us via microwave if asked. The variety and choices each day weren't bad at all and there was always someone around for a good chat from the staff.......both from the restaurant and the hotel side special mention of the hotel manager Grant oh we couldn't ask for a better person to deal with!!! Nondipha (spelling) Noel and the social media young lady who lv forgotten her name were all so amazing and made our stay extraordinary not to forget the security guys who all so friendly and helpful during the night as we had a few issues with our key cards for some reason and the safe......nothing that couldn't be fixed as fast! The icing on the cake is indeed the roof top bar and restaurant which is amazing on a night......we booked for dinner for 4 which was fantastic for a Tuesday night as wasn't as busy so was really in there for a while just chilling and listening to the lovely lively choice of music, a must to do if you are staying for a while here.
We used the massage service twice for my daughter who really needed the therapy as is unwell so had to give up my session as they only had one person working in there as would have been nice to be attended to together. I made an appointment for Saturday on a Friday only to have it cancelled by the time my daughter finished her session on Friday which was very sad as they do not open on Sundays and Mondays so in the end had to do without although the main reason we had also chosen the hotel was for this service which we really needed.
Yes l would highly recommend staying here and yes we will definitely be back again!!! I don't see why this place could not fix a few loose ends n move onto a 5 star service given its location and the amazing character of the building especially the restaurant downstairs as well as the roof top bar. We didn't get to use the 3rd floor entertainment area as was under revamping or being repurposed to premier services for the future something l really can't wait to experience on my next visit. I would also look at retraining the front desk staff especially the ladies as lm not quite sure why they were always miserable and unhelpful towards us! The reception is the heart of the business and really needs someone who comes to work ready to forget about their problems and give the place a good name by offering the best service l mean you can't be welcoming guests looking miserable......it just doesn't work! At the end of the day a smile changes everything as most guests are travelling from afar and very tired the best you can do is to just be pleasant that's all. The reason lm giving a 3 for service is just for this particular reason as you can't have the security guys being more pleasant and welcoming than the front dest staff😆😳becomes a joke really but hey people are going through a lot of issues in this life maybe the ladies we met were just not well at the time but its been a while since lv given such an iffy review of stuff like this and lm hoping this can be fixed as lm only doing it as constructive criticism and not bad vibing otherwise the elderly gent on the front desk was always a joy to deal with in fact he's the...
Read moreI've stayed here twice and so I'll start with the Reef's most positive attribute - the staff. I absolutely cannot fault their friendliness, "snap to it"-ness or willingness to help. They are quite simply terrific.
And the location is great if you need to be in CBD. And the restaurant is very good and deserves more patronage. And the rooms have funky decor that is a cut above the usual.
But all of that cannot overcome the sheer "Faulty Tower's" aspect of the hotel's infrastructure:
Johannesburg is a very noisy city and there has been no effort made to keep this out of the rooms. The window glass is not double glazed and the window that opens cannot be latched fully shut. Sadly, the rooms are the noisiest I've ever encountered so unless you sleep like the dead expect a disturbed night.
The TVs are a disaster, constantly breaking down. My colleague moved rooms because his TV would not work only to have the one in that room fail as well, and the fan in my TV was so noisy I had to pull the plug out at night to stop it keeping me awake.
The aircon in my first room (I moved rooms as well) was dripping so much water onto the carpet that the room smelt strongly of mould. My colleague said neither aircon worked in the rooms he was in.
I was given an iron from housekeeping and when I filled it with water it immediately poured out the bottom of the iron. They brought another one which was better but still leaked on my shirts.
When my phone was not charging from the power outlet I realised that none of the power plugs worked in my room.
My laptop refused to connect to the WiFi and even the guy who installed the network could not figure it out. That was a minor nuisance as there are a couple of Mac's in reception so I used them, but the WiFi login system kept failing to recognise guests and had to be rebooted on a regular basis.
Finally, be aware if you're planning on staying as a couple that the bathroom in all the rooms I've stayed in is not a separate room. Rather, the basin, shower and toilet are behind an internal partition that does not go to the roof and which has no door. It was not a problem for me traveling on my own, but there is not even the illusion of privacy when you use the bathroom so if you stay with a friend make sure it's a...
Read moreIt was overall a great stay at the Reef hotel. I was only here from 11am saterday, until 7am sunday, so 1 night. -They partner with a company for airport shuttles. It was (950 Rand) for round trip airport transfer. Check in was easy, but i was early at 11am, so paid 350 Rand for early check in. Noticed lots of workers like to dance, a guy from restaurant, and lady from door desk both dancing to themselves, happy. -Room was good, big, good views. Fridge, and many outlets to charge things. I did accidentally test their outlet safety system and got a shock when plugging in my adaptor to outlet, but it was my own fault, and all outlets were out. One call to reception and they sent the mechanic up to look, and switched it back on. TV works with 1 English channel i could find. Big bath tub and shower. Safe in the room, big closet and drawers, and 2 desks. -The hotel takes up one whole block, and has a restaurant below (i never went there), and a bar on the roof (i went to the entrance of it, but was underdressed so didnt enter (they have a sign saying dress code), no one was at the entrance though. there is 4 elevators, but at least 1 was not working. 2 staircases, one in building by elevators, and one on the side of the building away from elevators. Nice views from side stairs. -Location is great, 20 min drive from/to airport if not rush hour. 2 blocks from ghandi square, with lots of food options. It was a good location for pickup for my soweto tour, i was last picked up and first dropped off. I was out at night and it felt safe for me. beer/weed store next door
negatives: -The shower mat/wooden floor thing blocked the drain while i was in there, i guess the way i was standing? i couldnt see the drain, but i could see the shower filling up with water like a bath tub, then shifted the mat and it started draining. -no airport...
