The Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch is a gem for art enthusiasts, showcasing a dynamic blend of South African and international artists through thoughtfully curated themed exhibitions. The recent display of J.H. Pierneef’s Johannesburg Station panels was a standout, cleverly hung high to mirror their original elevated placement, immersing viewers in the artist’s intended perspective. The museum’s modern design and intimate galleries create an inviting atmosphere, perfect for appreciating both established and emerging talents. The on-site restaurant adds a unique touch, featuring a striking wall repurposed from Vladimir Tretchikoff’s Bishopscourt home fireplace, blending culinary and artistic heritage. A must-visit for its innovative exhibitions and cultural charm.

Quite a peaceful museum, thoroughly enjoyed the pieces of art displayed, and a relatively wide range might I add. They had paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, and various intriguing displays and set ups. I’d say it’s worthwhile if you’re looking for something to do on any given day. Visited Stellenbosch that day and stumbled upon it on our drive around. There’s a theme of political, and socioeconomic background throughout the museum. Entrance was free on the Wednesday I visited and the staff was friendly. I will be posting a Tiktok on this museum (@pashieb)

Amazing art gallery to visit. Most of the best South African artist's work from 1940 to early 2000 are exibited. My favourites are Maggie Laubsher, Thinus de Jongh and Pierneef. Nowhere in South Africa do you get the opportunity to see all of these works under one roof. Amazing guided tours as well. The guides are very knowledgable and share amazing history about the artists. The coffee shop is in a great setting and has become one of my favourites. Entry was free. Parking is safe. The Rupert museum is worth visiting a few times if you love art.

I drive past the museum every week, and I've always wondered what what the exhibits are like inside. But I've always assumed I would have to pay an entrance fee to see them. I recently fell victim to scammers who emptied all of my savings, so I thought I'd spend the day crossing local things off my bucket list before my planned exit. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there is no entrance fee.

The Pierneef collection is extensive and beautiful. I never thought I'd get to see so many of his originals.

I really loved Forel's macro photographs in his Synchromies series. Perhaps the topic of growth and decay was all the more relatable due to my mindset.

The building is lovely, the art is sublime, the staff and security are friendly, and there is ample safe parking.

Everyone should visit the museum. If you haven't been yet, add it to your...
